I have a some movies in this format and they play on my plex but wondered if there was a standalone player thats not internet connected that would play these? I have the old Western digital media players but they dont play this format. i figured the Nvida Shield may play them. Anybody else have H265 formated movies that can play with no internet connection?

Does VLC work? It used to handle most everything, but I really haven't messed with any of that stuff in years since adding all my stuff to Plex.

Nvidia Shield also has a Plex server built in so if you want to keep using Plex for media local to the device itself, you can

So if i went on a trip where there was no internet and had a nvidia shield i could still watch the h265 movies by just connecting shield to a TV?

Not even a little true. Try it yourself. Pull the coax out of your modem and you can enjoy Plex on any tv or phone in your house.

If you're using a PC and web browser you'll have to know the local IP address of the box running Plex server but that will work too.

I had a 2 day internet outage after covid hit and Plex was the only thing everyone at my house could watch.

Shocker: I even posted a thread on it here.

That was what finally pushed me over the edge to try Plex. I wanted an all-local video solution that never again required me to be at the whims of the licensing merry go round of online services.

I want to watch any James bond movie and I damn well better see them all listed.

Totally agree having a nice fall back plan and not depending on the internet / cable to give family entertainment if internet goes down or i'm not local. Having External Drives reasonably priced and able to store say 14TB doesnt hurt

In many cases local Plex needs access to the internet so the client can connect to the Plex Authentication server. I've seen many pissed off users in threads on /r/plex about this issue.

quote:

But for that experience to work, your computer needs to phone home to Plex and authenticate. If it can’t, well, the whole system grinds to a halt.

Thankfully, there are two easy ways around the problem: tweaking how Plex uses the authentication system and, in special cases, falling back on the DLNA system as a backup. We recommend setting both up, as described in the sections below, to ensure you’re never left high and dry.

Before we proceed, there are two very important caveats. First and foremost, you must make these changes in advance. You have to be online and logged into your Plex account to make changes to your local Plex Media Server. There is no way around this. If you want to access your Plex Media Server when the internet is down, you must make the changes now before the server is offline.

quote:

Second, If you are using the Plex Home system, a premium feature that comes with the Plex Pass that allows you to set up user profiles for people in your home, there is no way to use that system offline with a Plex client.

strawman argument.

they're referring to initial login to the app on the various sticks, etc. which you only do ONE TIME. by that argument you could say 'well you can't download and install the app without internet so plex doesn't work!' i'm talking about once you're setup everything works local; no authentication required outside of your local box's plex server on your local network.

this is a dishonest article.

and, when connecting DIRECTLY via the local IP address its 100% bulletproof. the server is local; ergo it will fire up and run.

you can spout theocraticals all you want; i'm telling to get off the 'howtogeek' articles and unplug the coax from your cable and try it for yourself so you'll quit posting misinformation.

i ran plex on all my local devices. ALL OF THEM. and i did this for 2 solid days without any issue whatsoever and this includes having to enter a PIN for my master account each time.

much easier and truthful than googling 'pissed off plex users'.

100% Pure Grade 92 Octane bullshite. I have Plex Pass and about 10 user accounts and logged in to several of them during the outage. Obviously this was on my local devices and not remote. The only way this is true is if you LOGGED COMPLETELY OUT and need to login to your Plex account again which uses their website. Nobody does this. Thats like saying every time you open Netflix on your TV you key in your email address & password. If your users have PINs setup then you can enter those offline because that's all held locally.

ETA i should point out i purchased the lifetime pass. i wonder if you are paying monthly if it needs to connect to plex to ensure you have paid for the month. maybe that is what the author is implying and would actually make a little more sense b/c if not, Plex wouldn't be able to disable those features for non-payment. In fact this would have to be true or else everyone would pay for one month of plex pass and then cut off access to the plex website afterward so they could get it free forever.

Whenever I unplug my modem I am unable to switch users, but everything else does work. However, a couple months back the Plex servers were down and I couldn't access anything on my own server for a few hours. So something else is afoot.

ETA: I do have a lifetime Plex pass.

same. that was a plex-wide outage and now that i think about it; you are correct. it seemed to mess with my local stuff as well when that happened.

and to correct the record on users; i went back & looked and you're correct; each user was pre-logged into their device so i wasn't actually 'switching' users; i was simply logging in as different users that were already setup.

iow i think i lied when i said i was actively switching users on devices when the internet was down; the various users were just able to get in on their accounts because i had set them up to log in automatically.

I'm so confused. So you're trying to set up your server using the hotel's wifi? How did you expect this to work outside your local lan? Your laptop/server won't have the same IP address as your home network.

Why don't you just play the media directly if you brought the hard drive with all the movies on it with you?

When I travel I always download several movies and TV shows through the UX so I can watch them offline on my laptop in Plex on the airplane or other places without internet access.

That's exactly what I was doing. I wasn't connected to the hotel wifi. In order to play the files off my local disc using Plex, I had to use my phone wifi hotspot to authenticate with Plex servers.

14 TB hard drive plugged into Mac mini which was connected to the TV. Can't get any more local than that.
