Seems as if computers aren't exactly as relevant as they once were. Seems tablets are more prominent, or we just use our cell phones(which we are attached too). Is it realistically gotten to the point where purchasing a laptop is something we second guess or just isn't something we aren't willing to do?

i'm the opposite. i'm on my laptop all the time. a phone is ok, but if i'm at home, i'm gonna use my laptop. has music, portable to be used as an MP3 player if cooking (don't care to spend $ on bluetooth speakers), has all my important work documents, large enough screen to browse, and can watch sports games when i'm at my parents house (who don't have cable)

oh, i can also text on whatsapp if need be

It just depends on use. The majority people just use tablets/laptops to surf the web. I say it is definitely relevant for developers

I finally got a laptop at work a few months back and it’s awesome. I had them at former jobs where we traveled to clients all the time. But had a desktop here for years. Moved to a different floor with more technology and everyone has laptops so I got one as well. Easier to work at home now if I need to. I rarely get on our Mac at the house. Usually just use my phone there but I’ve found myself pulling the laptop out a few times to work on things or go browse the internet now that I have it.

I think the tablet takeover is very overstated

It's a pain in the arse to do serious work on a tablet, even those designed for professionals.

If you work from home or on the road then yes, laptops are relevant. I prefer drafting documents and responding to emails with a real keyboard, than if I had a tablet or tablet w/ add-on keyboard. I take my laptop w/ me on work trips, etc.
