Getting the wife an Apple Watch series 3 for Christmas. I can’t see where the cellular version is that much more useful. We are rarely away from our phones. I do like smart watches so I can see messages as they come in without having to pull out my phone. With small kids in the house, phones are frequently left in another room while tending to the kids. However it isn’t like we’d leave the house with the watch but not the phone.

Anyone have a good sales pitch on why i should get the cellular version?

It's not much more useful. For me, it was a nifty feature that I couldn't see myself using more than a handful of times. Far from a necessity.

It came down to not being able to justify spending $70 more on the watch itself and no way was I going to pay an extra $10/mo to AT&T for the ability to talk on it away from my phone.

The non-cellular has the same function with the exception of your phone has to be within range and connected for it to work.

My phone is left in other rooms all the time and I have no problem talking on the watch when I get a call in and around the house.

If she likes to run outside and you think she would enjoy running without carrying a phone to listen to music, that would be about the only reason I could see to get the cellular version.

Even athletics in a gym don't make sense for a cellular version. If your gym has wifi (which pretty much all do) your watch would still be connected to the 'known network' that your phone is connected to, and you could do most of the features you would be able to do with a cellular Apple Watch (Except stream Apple Music? But then I would just sync a playlist to the watch).

unless you really see yourself leaving your phone behind i don't see a use for it. i got the gps only version and the only time i see myself having the watch only is on runs. i don't take calls or texts on a run so i don't see the point.

I have the Series 2 and it is plenty for me.

I got the wife a Series 3 and as others have said, it is the same watch - but for me it was worth the extra money for when she walks alone. The ability to make a call in an emergency is worth it for me.

FYI - It was incorrectly stated that you still need the phone to listen to music while running/walking/working out with the Series 2... This is incorrect.

The watch itself can play music through bluetooth headphones while exercising. You DO NOT need to bring the phone with the Series 2.

This is my thought as well. I have the first generation of the watch which doesn't have GPS. Really, it's the one feature I wish it had.

I am thinking about getting an apple watch. Not sure if I need one. I might, I might not. I have an iphone, and while I have considered switching to android when my time comes, if I get an apple watch I will just not switch. For those of you who have them, tell me your likes & dislikes? Which one should I get?

I have the series 2 apple watch and love it.

However...Apple has stopped selling the series 2(because it is not much different than the new one and they want to force people into the series 3)...so now your option is the series 3 or the series 1. Series 1 still has no GPS and is not waterproof. Series 3 is not much different than the series 2 except for the new cellular feature(which seems more gimmicky to me and not something I would actually use).

ETA: Get the series 3 one that doesn't have the cellular option

does it do anything special, besides what my phone does. Or is it just an extension of my phone?

It is nice getting alerts on the watch. I can be in one room of the house and leave my phone in another...and still get alerts on my watch (texts, calls). I like the GPS activity tracking on it as well. Use it to track workouts, etc. Can control music I'm listening to on my phone through the watch and leave phone in my bag when I'm working out. Just all kinds of cool things that you come to really appreciate the longer you have the watch.

Also great for work, mine is synced to my third party calendar app on my phone and it gives me alerts for all meetings, appointments, etc.

Is it an absolute necessary thing? No. But it certainly can make your life a little easier.

From most accounts it seems like the biggest use for cellular is like many said for going on runs without your phone. Personally, I'm not sure that's worth another $70 and $10/month. Also, I'm pretty sure when it's standalone on LTE it kills the battery.

I'm interested in it, but I'll probably wait a couple generations before I consider cellular any more and they work out some improvements.

Anyone grabbed the S1 recently? I don't need the cellular option, so S3 is out the window. Is there much of a difference between S1 and S2 outside of being water resistant?

For that price...hell no.

It's basically having two cell phones.

Ask yourself honestly, how often are you without your phone; and how often do you need phone capabilities when you are without your phone.

If the answer is not much, then it's a waste of money.

Plus, you have to factor in the extra $10 per month for a separate LTE service.

Also,

some apps in the current WatchOS still don't work without your iPhone, regardless of having LTE enabled.

S1 doesn't have GPS(if you aren't using the watch for any activity tracking then I guess this doesn't matter much to you)

And S2 is no longer sold by Apple. So your only options are S1 and S3.

You can buy a S3 watch without the cellular option.

I have the cellular and use it all the time. I’m a salesman and leave my phone in my truck. Also leave it at home all the time after work. It’s very nice

So I could go running with a series 2 and listen to podcasts without having my phone in range?
