Yes it does. Or at least it does on my Android. It will automatically prompt you to watch the youtube of the song instead of just the music track.

have something similar to Beats 1

Yeah, that's a fringe feature but very cool.

Apple music library is almost 2x as big, Google Play Music isn't available in over 100 countries

That's why I said they should brag about any improvements.

Because the article was about the Apple music announcement.

Then why did it mention Spotify?

YouTube is a separate service in a different app. But I get what you're saying.

Because they're the biggest player in streaming music right now.

I mean I like Rdio, but I'm not about to start bitching that the article didn't mention Rdio because they're an also ran.

Perhaps. But practically speaking, from the user's perspective, there's just a button in Play that asks you if you want to watch the video instead of just listening to the song.

Are you possibly overestimating the reach of Google Play? I can't find a number of subscribers for them. Spotify has 75 million users, 20 million of which are paying subscribers LINK Pandora has 75 million subscribers with 3.3 million paid LINK

This graphic is from a survey, which probably isn't as accurate as publicly released subscriber data, but it puts Google in the back half of the streaming services, not exactly the position of relevance you are trying to paint for it.

Maybe. I think Google has actually done a lousy job of promoting it. I think Spotify is definitely a better comp than Pandora, though, based on choice.

It's hard to believe that Rhapsody is still around. I had them like 12 years ago, but their desktop and mobile UI's were just so ridiculously clunky.

This is a pre WWDC rumor, not an official Apple target, but they think they can get 100 million paying subscribers.

quote:

Apple expects to attract 100 million paying subscribers to its new music streaming service, which will be announced at its WWDC keynote today, 8 June.

...Currently, around 41 million people globally pay for streaming services like Spotify and Deezer, while subscription revenue grew by 39% in 2014, up to $1.6bn.

LINK

So they plan to more than triple the paid streaming market. At first it sounds crazy, but is there really any value to buying music through iTunes once they start offering a subscription? This is kind of like all the software that has moved to subscription models, they already have a good idea of how big the user base is, so it's all just a matter of time before the users are forced to go to your subscription.

I started out with Spotify and then moved to Google Play Music. It seems like every time I have the urge to move back to Spotify, Google tweaks it enough to keep me interested. I think the radio station creation is a lot better than Spotify's as well.

Why not just add a fresh $1B/month in revenues to the juggernaut?

i sent that article to a friend when i first saw it with LULZ as the subject. I'd be shocked, SHOCKED, if they had even half that after 1 year.

It only really seems crazy in terms of the current streaming market. I don't think they'll convert many people already paying for a service or bring that many new people into the market, at least not in the first year. But if you look at it as Software Sales converted to Software Subscriptions, they have a lot of data to work with and come up with reasonable numbers.

If I can get any song I want streaming, why would I ever buy an album/song? This looks like it kills iTunes, probably part of why it took them so long to go to a streaming model, but iTunes death doesn't have to be in vain if they convert all of those known paying customers into subscribers.

I'm not sure this is accurate. I dont subscribe to the WSJ but my buddy said they just did an article on library sizes. it was like 37 million songs on itunes to 30 million on google play music.

Larger, but certainly not 2x.

I've been paying for a google play subsscription since it started....and have not used it at all. I should probably give it a look or cancel it. It wasn't nearly as user friendly as spotify back then though

It's very user friendly. I dont know how it was at inception but it's had updates.

Creating playlists and such is extremely simple.

I never had spotify, but i think i can say with almost certainty no. They might have a little feature here on there but nothing that would be worth the trouble of switching.

All of these music streaming services are the same. Really the only way Apple Music could have done something groundbreaking is if they made it $2 a month.
