Got an email today saying that photos in high quality will count to your google storage. It tells me I can upload in original quality to save space? I think..? Or do they mean that original quality takes more space?
So like - what does this mean?

Your photos & videos are backing up from this device in Original quality. These items have always counted towards your 200 GB of Google Account storage, and that won’t change. However, if you choose to back up in High quality instead, photos & videos you upload after June 1, 2021 will also start counting towards your account storage.

WHY WE’RE CHANGING
Today, over 1 billion people, including you, back up a remarkable 28 billion photos to Google Photos each week. In order to welcome even more of your memories and build for the future, we are making this change.

I don't use Google Photos, but what you posted sounds like:
Original Quality > High Quality
Your current photos are grandfathered in. If you want the same deal for new photos, downgrade them to High Quality. If you keep them on Original Quality you'll need to buy more space.

Original Quality = highest quality and always took up space from your google account storage, unless you were a grandfathered pixel users many years ago
High Quality = Compressed picture that google let people store without counting against your storage, unless you are grandfathered in with a Pixel phone
Starting June 1st all high quality photos added to google photos, will count against your data cap as well.
Basically there is no more free storage. so if you dont want to pay best start moving your stuff elsewhere

It’s $70 a year for 1 TB, but im a fan of OneDrive. You get Office 365 as well.

You might consider trying MS OneDrive. No compression of stills or video.
$2/month 100gb.
Make sure you turn on MFA.
