$500 “budget laptop” recommendations?

My primary computer will still be a MacBook.
What are brand/spec configurations I can expect to get for a Windows based laptop in this price range?
If possible, I’d like to get a smaller, lighter and as sleek looking laptop as I can with long battery life. Speed, too, is important, but I’m not expecting M1 performance either.

Depending on what you really want/need to do with it, a Chromebook might fit the bill...even a touchscreen model will still come in well under budget.
I literally have a stack of laptops, tablets, iPads, here, and 1 Chromebook...the CB is the first one the family grabs for something portable.
The battery life is quite surprising, and it's pretty quick for a glorified tablet.

Chrome book.
I have an Asus C434. It flips from laptop to touchpad seamlessly. It’s a good workhorse.

Chromebook fan here. A few years ago their touchscreen was buggy, surely they've fixed that though. I have the most basic Chromebook, like a $200 Acer model and it hasn't failed me yet. Does everything I want it to do, fires up in an instant, good battery life.

My primary computer is an 8 year old MacBook Pro. Originally I just got it for travel, and then I realized that it is amazing for audio production. Then I realized that it’s awesome in general and very linux-like under the hood which is means it is easy to keep clean and is great for development. It’s less prone to getting AIDS and is rock solid. Definitely not gross.
Plus, MagSafe FTW.

Go to Newegg and filter on you budget, 8GB RAM and an SSD. Add more filters until your choices are narrowed down.
For $500 you get something like this:
Lenovo Ideapad 3 Laptop 14" FHD Intel Core i5-1035G1 4-Core up to 3.60Ghz Intel UHD Graphics 8GB RAM 256GB SSD

I use deluxepcs.com. Budget, but you get a lot for your money.

Get a Samsung Tab S7
Dex mode with keyboard case is sweet as hell. It's a desktop mode that covers most day to day task. It even works with my dell usb-c docking station when I want to use a full sized monitor.
Not a true laptop, but with Dex its really damn close.
Then you get a tablet with the the S-pen as well. I'm extremely impressed with mine.
Hell I even can get Ubuntu to run on it with some nerding out a bit.
I can do 90% of my work on this thing.
