Anyone have a nice tutorial of what to print first for setup? I know about the calibration cubes and the benchy. But is there an all in one "IFTTT" guide on calibrating?
This is probably the most famous all in one test print

Nice I haven't seen that one. I have read to do specific tests first before you do the all in ones.
I wish my printer was here already. We just had our 2nd kid and I want some things to do around the house when everyone is napping

Eh, just do some prints and skip the tests, benchy is a good one though, you will learn where your printer is struggling for your needs from what you are wanting it to do. Make sure you find a really good first layer guide for your printer though, a lot of people bitch and whine about not sticking and try all kinds of goofy shite because they never learned to level the bed and get a good first layer. Don't be afraid to stop a print early and check out whats going on. Look in usergroups and forums for profiles based on the exact filament you are buying and try a few. They can even be a little different printing between colors for the same brand. My silver Hatchbox ABS is a lot more finicky than my white and black.
Get you a nice tote to use as a filament box to keep your filament dry and stored too. Don't leave it out.

Do you have an enclosed printer to print ABS? Is it as problematic as people say with the heat?

yeah i have a few in there from when they come with the filament.
Yes, I have a frankenstein DIY Ikea one Prusa designed for my printer. It isn't sitting on a lack table though, I found those tables to be too unstable and would mess with clean exterior lines. I have a really sturdy table that I put a lack table on top of and found a place local that would cut plexi for cheap. ABS is real sensitive to temp changes and air movement. I also keep it in an area I can ventilate because ABS is nasty, not as bad as resin, but still bad. I use ABS a lot though because of the acetone vapor smoothing. Buy a dedicated rice cooker for that if you want to go there. Boiling acetone is such a good idea, lol, but it is so much easier and faster than letting it sit in a pot for hours.

Any reqs on a tote box? Looking to house a handful of spools. 6 or so.

I've been looking at getting a 3D printer too and I have the opportunity to use a Makerbot Replicator for a limited time. I'm not planning on dropping $2K on my first machine and have decided that I'm probably going to go ahead and buy an Ender 3 or 5. Should I even play around with the Makerbot or will it just make me seriously disappointed when I end up with one of the Ender machines?

I just got a nice rubbermaid

Mine is getting delivered tomorrow. Probably going to have to wait until the weekend to put it together and get it setup. I got some Overture PLA off Amazon just to have some this weekend when I get the printer together. We'll see how it does, it was ~$30 a roll. I also order 3 rolls of eSun PLA+ from another site for $17.95/roll shipped. I plan on just storing the PLA in some vacuum-able storage bags that I already have for now. May make some dedicated boxes later down the road. They got some pretty spendy storage solutions out there though.

mine says it is getting delivered next tuesday. I really home that is a very conservative estimate from fedex. but im not banking on it. yea i got a bunch of different branded PLA and PETG from ebay, now im thinking it was a mistake. Probably once the covid crazy goes down and stock comes back in ill stick with one brand so i dont need 10 different profiles for brand and color of filament.

I just go with Hatchbox PLA and ABS, never had an issue with either and get great results.
I always liked Makergeeks PETG, but they shut down, got to find a better PETG. A lot of people had bad customer service with them.

Up and running. I believe I got one with a bed that's not so flat... :(

Yeah I got a BLTouch to do the mesh bed leveling. Getting the BLTouch setup and vanilla Marlin installed is involving a lot of googling. Think I have it figured out now though.

Why did you go with vanilla Marlin ?
Posted on 6/5/20 at 4:58 pm to CarRamrod
Pretty much my only choice from what I can tell if I want auto bed leveling. The vanilla adds thermal runaway protection and works with the stock board and BLTouch v3.1 that I have. Creality offers a version of Marlin that works with the BLTouch, but it doesn't work with the BLTouch v3/3.1 and Ender 3 board. TH3D has a version of Marlin, but I didn't really look into it because it seemed mostly geared towards using their proprietary board and ABL device.

So based on your research, if I get a bltouch, can the silent board that comes with the ender 5 pro do autobed leveling or will I need to flash new firmware?
Posted on 6/5/20 at 6:44 pm to CarRamrod
Based on my research, which is far from conclusive, none of the Enders support auto bed leveling out of the box nor do their boards have pins to natively support ABL sensors or filament run-out sensors. Specifically on the Ender 3 board you can use one or the other by hijacking pin 27, which is the buzzer. So, you can have ABL or FRO sensor. The Ender 5 board is probably similar if not the same. Upgrading the firmware is really a must tho anyway for the thermal runaway protection. I have looked into getting the Bigtreetech skr mini e3 which comes with vanilla Marlin and pins for ABL and FRO sensors as well as better movement of the machine. But, I want to get mine up and running with the BLTouch first and do some prints before I dive any deeper into modding. I haven't even loaded filament in mine yet
. I basically put mine together, did the bed leveling, noticed there were a lot of highs and lows at various spots with the bed level, found out about mesh bed leveling and have been in a BLTouch/Marlin/How-to-flash rabbit hole for the past week or so. I think I've finally got that sorted though and will be flashing tonight or tomorrow, and if that doesn't open a can of worms I'm hoping to start printing and tramming the machine. One issue I already know is the top cross bar on mine has the screw holes that mate with the holes in the uprights drilled too wide which pushes the uprights about 1/16" out of parallel at the top.
