What's the best option?

For my son's 16th birthday. He plays apex/fortnite/call of duty black ops.

Edit: since some people feel like my money spent on my son is their problem, let me address it.

He is 15 years old, has been the pianist at our church since he was 12, he is paid by the church for his work and his practice. He bought his own vehicle with his own money and therefore I feel like spending that small amount I'm still way ahead.

He would like to game at 4k but I doubt our internet is capable of doing that right now. We're supposed to be getting fiber within the next year.

He has a gaming monitor now but he is into editing quite a bit so multiple monitors would be a plus.

He has a headset but will need a keyboard, he has a gaming mouse.

$2500 including or not including, Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, Headset?

That makes a big difference.

I would think for a PC gamer kid who’s into that type of thing, piecing together a build would a major part of the enjoyment. He’ll certainly appreciate it if you bought him a $2500 gaming rig, but I think he’d feel a lot more attachment/happiness by selecting the parts and building it himself or with you.

If this is the direction you’re going (and just asking for some direction here), good luck and have fun.

The best components are in short supply and expensive.
You don't cite his birth date but if you want to build, I would wait until after the first of the year.
Otherwise, you might be better off buying a pre-built system.

It was supposed to be a 3080 FE, a 5600, and a nice 32gb kit of whatever ram the techies decided played nicest with Zen 3. Then, when AMD announced Zen 3, I wasn't crazy about the combination of an x-only launch (+$50) combined with a $50 price hike, putting the 5600x at $300. So, I decided to buy a 3600 on sale for $175 instead of waiting another month for Zen 3. Then because I still didn't know what ram to buy because review embargos wouldn't lift for another month, I just pulled the trigger on a basic set of set of 16gb ram to hold me over. And being those were on the way, and I kept coming up short on buying a 3080 FE, I pulled the trigger on a 3070 FE on the day it dropped.

Now the plan is to play through my game backlog (which is legion...) while I wait another year or so and catch a 5800 or 5900 on sale and upgrade the RAM. And hopefully around that time, Nvidia will be coming out with Hopper (the successor to Ampere), and then if those specs work out, I'll upgrade that in a year in a half or so.

Super long winded, but yeah, that was the odyssey that was this recent build

ETA: My case is actually the silver/aluminum version of the o11xl, but that's still never been added to pcpp.

So basically... $2500 for everything is your budget?

Does your son want to game at 1080p, 1440p, or 4k?

My son bought his own Jeep with his own money from his own job 2 weeks after he got his hardship back in September. I can buy him a computer and still be way ahead.

He's a great kid who is extremely responsible. I feel like $2500 is a fair deal since I didn't spend a dime on the vehicle.

Preferably 4k but our internet is probably not going to allow that to happen. They're supposed to be putting fiber in within the next year.

Internet speed is irrelevant for the resolution of your PC.

Resolution and refresh rate are going to be inversely proportional. If your kid is trying to be competitive, he’s likely gunning for at least 120hz, if not 240hz. Those refresh rates generally aren’t feasible at 4K.

Go grab the make and model of his current monitor. That would be constructive.

Man I'm jealous i built myself a rig with a $600 budget/$1000 with peripherals and the $2500 ones are pretty. The kid is going to enjoy it.

Very nice components but many of them aren't available through the PCPartPicker links. I'm going to wait until later next year when hopefully there is better availability and prices for the latest AMD processors and Nvidia video cards.
