2012 MacBook Pro basically unusable after latest update

I had been purposefully not updating my mac, but Monday night it auto updated and today it’s so slow it’s just about unusable. I’m curious about If I can revert back or somthing. I really am not in a position to buy a new laptop, but I realize this one is 8 years old.

You can restore from a time machine backup if you have one. If not, you can boot to system recovery and download the MacOS that came with it.
if you go the system recovery route, reboot it and hold down command R

How dare they create a machine that can last for 8 years

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro and it seems like it hasn't slowed down at all. Maybe something went wrong with the update?
You should be using time machine. You could roll back and try again, if you did.
Also, lol at these people acting like it's unheard of for a Windows laptop to slow down after 8 years.

They wouldn’t be slow...they would already be dead.

I also have an ipad that worked perfectly fine for my kids to play games and watch videos on until apple forced me to update it which then turned into a brick immediately.
So there's that...

Microsoft sped up older hardware when upgrading from XP to Windows 7 and again to Windows 10.
Facts are stubborn things.

Come on dude, you're better than this.
My mom's Toyota broke down but her Ford never did. This must be indisputable evidence of.. ?
I think 8 years is a reasonably good lifespan for a daily driver. Most people in corporate settings come begging for a new laptop once theirs gets around 3 years old.
The one Alienware that I worked on had overheating issues. It seemed manageable after redoing the thermal paste, but it was a big chunky laptop that overheated on soft surfaces. I am not going to make broad stroke judgements about the brand based on that one experience. Alienware obviously puts good components in there.
edit: Microsoft hit a home run with Windows 10, btw. I agree that it's a good OS. I am personally a Linux/OSX guy but Windows 10 is great, especially in a corporate environment. There's still way more driver and overheating issues that crop up than there should be - particularly with the higher wattage thunderbolt laptops.

Apples are made to die rapidly. I would never buy a Mac.

Has nothing to do with Windows though. The manufacturers that cheap out on shite like this ruin a lot of what Microsoft has to offer

My mac is at least 9 years old. Never had an issue. Bought a dell computer about 4 years ago for my son to play around on and do school work. It’s so slow it just sits collecting dust. We’ve reboot it multiple times thinking there must be a virus. It’s just crap.

this post tells me 2 things:
1. you have not updated your mac to the latest OS because its no secret apple doesn't give a shite about older devices and in fact they make more money from their base by forcing the concept of 'fake obsolescence' (just look at the # of people this thread thinking a 9 year old computer should be taken out in the backyard & shot) because they ignore optimizations and impact on older hardware when designing new OS updates.
FACT
2. You don't sound like the type of person a PC is designed for.

clearly you bought this with bias in mind from the start. you probably let your son download games & shite until he killed it. i bet you $100 i can reformat that machine & put Windows 10 on it and have it zipping along.
Microsoft understands not everyone in the world can live on the apple '3 year update' plan so they take great pains to squeeze as much out of older hardware as possible when releasing major OS updates. Again, I'm running a 9 year old PC as a server AS WE SPEAK and its incredible. Absolutely no reason for me to upgrade it just because 'its 9 years old'.
eta i have a drawer full of old iphones & ipads right now because my wife and daughters love them but EVERY SINGLE ONE is in the drawer..not because they're broken..but because Apple BRICKED THEM with iOS updates.

This thread makes me wanna boot up my old 2011 and see if the update bricks it.
I wiped it clean to sell it recently, but haven't yet. Once I wiped it of the garbage it was running as fast as day 1.

I have a 2010 macbook, updated ram and popped an ssd inside a couple of years ago. Runs like new...
But frick apple. I have enough brick ipads around. Hate the way apple forces upgrades and defaults to import photos into iphoto, etc.
I have another 2009 that I wiped cleaned and have been running elementaryOS and so far I like it.

Looks like if the 8gb ram I have 7.32 is being used. This is new, any ideas how to free up ram? I’m not certain if this computer will accept bigger than 2 4gb sticks of Ram idk.

I bought a cheap SSD for my 2012 MacBook and it's ran like a champ ever since.
