For a first time flyer 9 y/o. Video feature would be cool. Easier controls. Good flight time. Thanks

I’d try to find a DJI Mavic Mini (1 not 2). Not sure how close to $200 you’ll get, but shouldn’t be far off.

I looked for Christmas last year and decided to spend a little more for a better drone. It was a great decision and it’s been a good device. Plus you get familiarity with the DJI interface and controls if you decide to upgrade later.

Some of the cheaper drones had horrid flight time (like < 7 mins) and reports of disconnection and the drone just flying away.

I've been looking at the same criteria as the OP and while the Mini is closer to $300, it's the clear winner for a starter drone. Everything else closer to the OP's price point has a tendency to fly away. That thought leads me to consider something MUCH cheaper and regard it as "disposable" with the idea that if the kid likes it, the disposable drone can be discarded for a real one and if the kid doesn't take to it the cost of entry is lower.

Personally, I've been considering a drone for my own use as well so will likely get the Mini.

just pulled the trigger on a DJI Mini SE for my FiL. I know he's going to love it!

Its light enough you can avoid FCC nonsense and I added a memory card & waterproof case and it was roughly $400 out the door.

Considering he gave us a golf cart this year its the least I can do.

eta thank you for starting this thread. i didn't know anything about drones so this was helpful to see what brand everyone prefers.

here's a good breakdown of all the 2022 DJI models:

These drones are getting crazy cheap. I just saw one at Home Depot for 35 bucks and it has a video camera. Probably not the best, but would most likely be a throwaway.

This is what I would get my kids if they were that age. If they don't like it or they destroy it (more likely), then I wouldn't be out much money. If they do like it and are responsible enough to keep it in one piece, I could upgrade later.

9 is a little young imo, but you’re the decision maker. I have DJI mini 1 and just got Avata in the mail yesterday.

I have crashed the mini a few times and lost signal while flying but it’s solid intro. Shipping from DJI was like a week so I’d be ordering very soon if you go thru DJI. There are other places to buy from and you can still add the insurance thru DJI. The only thing I don’t like about the mini 1 is that you use your phone and it’s kind of a pain in the arse. Also very easy to lose line of sight. I have a 9 year old and id rather him fly the new Avata vs the mini because of safety features.

Best thing about mini is it’s under 249 so you don’t have to register it. Looks like you could probably get a used/refurbished one at that price point from 3rd party. There’s some mini 2s and mini 1 new w fly more kit around $400.

Nice! I used DJI to get their credit since I was spending a good amount of money.

take my DJI mini 2 everywhere took it to Hawaii and Costa Rica this year and trust me I had some butt pucker moments but I always got it home. Beautiful video and easy to bring anywhere and it takes me less then two minutes to unpack it and get it up in the air. I may be moving to Mini 3 soon. For the OP I know home depot and Walmart have drones under $100 and as mentioned you probably can pick up a DJI mini 1 for a little over $100 on ebay.
