I would agree except we know Dempsey will provide nothing defensively on the left. Wood at least puts in a shift out there

It just irritates me how he plays at this point in his career, always trying the playground moves, which often stagnates a promising attack and then goes down way too easily.

I get that he has played like that for most of his career, but he really has seemed to amp it up in the last 2 years or so.

I think he's just in "frick it" mode at this point.

Ideally though, I would love him in that CAM role, shifting Bedoya out wide and Zardes to the bench.

This is basically what I would like to see but I don't see Jurgen dropping Zardes.

You'd probably be better off flipping Dempsey with Wood and using him as an inverted winger -- it works with Fabian playing LB

I tried arguing this in another thread, but it wasn't a very popular idea

Probably not, and it's Jurgen, I get it, but I just don't see how he could watch these last two friendlies and not say that Nagbe has been our best player in both matches.

His inclusion has to mean one of Bedoya or Zardes has to go to the bench. And, assuming we slot Nagbe into the midfield, a case can be made for Zardes ahead of Bedoya on the right wing.

In the 60th minute, bring on Pulisic for Zardes, move Wood to the right side.

I agree but I'd keep Pulisic on the right. He can play there too.

Clog the middle, force them outside.

Birnbaum is right-footed and has played 99% of his minutes at CB with only the smallest amount of dabbling at RB. He has never played LB. So I could definitely see the US using that lineup.

So Birnbaum is out of place. Castillo shouldn't be on the roster. Yes, Besler has played LB, but Birnbaum seemed the better option after a few oz of lagavulan.

Please, explain what else is so "WTF?" from this suggestion?

I think that would actually leave our left side super exposed. Fabian wants to push up and Dempsey sure as shite isn't tracking back.

Honestly, I stopped looking at it after seeing Birnbaum at LB

What's the case? Work rate? I would probably still pick Bedoya honestly, even on the wing. He can switch inside and outside with Nagbe to create some confusion. If they were to do that, it would be better than having Zardes out there.

I'd still slot Bedoya there, but the case for Zardes would be a speedier winger option.
