why wont the us implement the promotion/relegation system?

scary for investors.
now I think MLS teams developing a farm system could be good for the league, and US soccer in general.
don't get me wrong, promotion\relegation would be fun for spectators, I just don't think it's the best thing for the league as a whole.

To really make MLS a national sport they will have to succumb to using this system eventually just to have enough teams that will believe they have a chance of being in the top.
...but that's years and years away.

I think in 25-30 years we could see something like this.
I'm only 19 so maybe New Orleans can get a team that is awesome

I truly truly believe that if the USMNT starts putting on knockout stages performances in the WC every 4 years, that the popularity of the sport will sky rocket.
With continued financial stability/growth and better development at the youth level, in 30-40 years, I think that the MLS will be one of the best leagues in the world. Top 5 for sure. We have money, passionate fan bases and so on. I want to see world class players in their prime in the MLS by the time I'm an old man.
I want rumors like "insert top 10 player" is considering Chicago, NYC, Houston, LA, amongst offers from Man U, Bayern, and Barcelona.

I think something along the lines of a FIFA (in lieu of UEFA) Champions League could do it. The inability of the MLS to participate in the UCL is what will keep it from being an elite league. Yes, there is the Club World Cup, but it is comparable to the Confederations Cup on the international level rather than the World Cup.

MLS is still in its teenage years. It's going to be a long time before promotion/relegation is a possibility. The plan is to be a top league in the next few decades, but the groundwork of a financially stable future must be set in a non-soccer country for the most part. (The young'uns really like it, though, and that'll only help the popularity and growth down the road.)
It's also, as FOBUD said, anti-American when it comes to pro sports ownership.

A MLS team needs to win the Liga MX-dominated CONCACAF Champions League first. MLS teams don't have the talent to compete on the world stage...and no one really is expecting them to, thanks to the financial structure and age of the league.

The US pro-sport model is that the teams operate as franchises of the league rather than independently. The expansion process is way too expensive and complicated for the MLS to allow some teams to fall out of the league.

US sports leagues generally have a lot of year to year parody. I think each year in the NFL they have 5 teams in the playoffs that weren't the year before. There was about a 4 year stretch in the NFC south where the last place team from the previous year won the division.
My point is that US sports have a certain aspect of a quick turnaround to success that you can't have with promotion/relegation. Every year a team is a few lucky breaks/player upgrades away from the playoffs and possible contention.
It might work for the mls since it is a different league than the other US sports leagues, but I honestly would not like it.

Right now there aren't enough teams with big stadiums and fanbases to have relegation and promotion... I think once they get to the amount of teams they want in MLS, 24 or whatever it may be, and they expand the 2 lower divisions to a good number, I think we could maybe see it. I would like to see it in the future as it would get fans from all over the country to cheer for teams that could be in MLS.

I think it's a cool thing for the smaller clubs like Charleston to aim for promotion, but could you imagine one of the teams from a big city going down? Places like boston and new york are crowded sports markets and I think a fan base in those cities would forever be damaged by relegation.

I wish there was some type of financial punishment for teams who continue to suck and throw in the white towel purposely in American sports year after year. Sort of like administration in a weird way.

I think if we had this type of system in our sports it could drive out some of the shitty owners or make them hire people that can run their teams better, I'm looking at you Jerry Jones.
