I was a fan of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink myself

Yea but it’s funny when people make fun of themselves
We are American and for the majority on this board it’s not like college football where these teams have been engrained in our heads since birth.
Sure now that will change with the next generation and our kids, but it’s still “newer”

I can say with ALL honesty and sincerity that I've been a supporter of Manchester United for almost 25 years. And I really stumbled up on them.

I'm a black American guy from the hood. But I love them as much as I love Auburn, The Lakers, The Jaguars, The Braves, The Kings. It was natural.

I've never seen someone get upset on behalf of "real" fans of a club they absolutely loathe.

25 years is still pretty young.

Only saying that because my fandom for South Carolina doesn’t just start with me it goes back a few generations through family members going to the school

I'm a 1st generation United fan. And I just turned 40 this weekend. So more than half my life is a long enough time.

No it isn’t
That’s 1994, that’s not long ago.

I’m not knocking you.
I’m just saying for the majority of Americans soccer fans, this is all much newer when you compare it to College football(which this main board is) and that fandom goes back further before they were born.

Where as soccer, most of the time it doesn’t, especially if you look at the demographic of this board, where we don’t have the same geographic/family ties etc to these teams.

Basically I’m standing up for the guy who made the Chelsea joke, because you won’t find many of the mid 20-30 year olds who liked Chelsea before Roman

See...I'm on the fence about them. Because I hate new money teams like Chelsea, City, PSG, etc...but at the same time, its not the fans fault. So I'm torn.

I hate the Glazers, btw.

I don’t find any issue with anyone rooting for anyone in soccer here. Spread the love of the game and if you pick new money who cares

America pro sports are different IMO
This isn’t a native South Carolinian or some shite picking the Yankees

Even then I don’t think that’s bad as long as you stick with the team. Obviously just defining “legitimate fandom” is a stupid arse exercise in itself but I feel like if there isn’t a pro team of a sport within an hour or two drive from you then you can pick whoever you want as long as you stick with them.

Here’s why I do.

Because so many in this state hate northerners, hate “Yankees”.
Yet when you ask them who their favorite baseball team is they say the Red Sox or Yankees.

Atlanta is not far at all

That’s a super unique example (Braves fandom is distributed moreso all across the south rather than within Atlanta itself) but I do totally agree with your take on people contradicting their own cultural/social/political/etc beliefs with their chosen favorite sports teams.

Like certain conservative Christian poster here that is a supporter of all of the most left-wing clubs in Europe

Bhoy, he likes Celtic and St Pauli and I thought Marseille too but I double checked and he has a Lyon shield in his sig.

Celtic and St Pauli still leftist AF tho

(Eta: as much as everyone seems to likes to jab at him, myself included a couple times over the years, I will admit I’m not entirely just talking shite here and sorta like his posts and I legit wanna know why he likes these teams)
