What? HAHHAHA.
um yea plenty of people have said the NHL quality of play went down with expansion compared to before places like TB,Miami, Dallas and Phoenix got teams.
quote:
Why, because you say so? The MLS isnt competing with top leagues for talent now. There is a lot more middling talent floating around the world than you are admitting.
So the MLS is going to snap it all up, no point in adding teams if you don't have the quality of players to fill them and improve depth.

Speaking of who the MLS has to "Compete" with...
The MLS has to compete with the NFL,NHL,MLB and NBA. YOU STILL CANT SEE THIS and its hilarious and what people have been trying to point out to you for a couple of pages.
no shite it has to compete with other american leagues as well as the major leagues in the world.
Going to 32 teams is not going to magically fix that.

No. You are just dropping shite in to support your narrative now.

Now you are resorting to being a drama queen?

Well at least it good you finally fricking acknowledge who the real competition is for the MLS. If you cant understand how having to keep pace in saturating media markets with franchises and therefore national media contracts with the other 4 leagues in the US I dont know what to tell you man.

Bringing this up actually helps his point. The only way the MLS will compete with those other leagues is either a massive demographic shift or the quality of the MLS drastically increases. He's pointing out that creating a massive league (especially one with a fricked up "division" system) will lessen the quality of the league.

tv and revenue with media markets will only grow with increased quality of the league and players.
The MLS will need huge tv deals not only at home but abroad as well

WTF does that have to do with the MLS? The EPL isnt the competition for the MLS in the States long term.
Honestly you still refuse to acknowledge who the competition is for TV revenue and sports discretionary revenue is for the MLS long term. Who the competition will be for its growth.
Im not going to be the next guy in line that gets into a 5 page argument with you.
Have a nice night man.

If you ignore the fact that tv revenue is just more than what the MLS can get in America than you are being ignorant.
Especially to sustain itself as a top league with 30+ teams.

Cap at 24 teams. 12 team conferences. 6 from each conference make the playoffs. No relegation.
Make it American, dammit.

The U.S. is a massive enough market that I'm guessing they are hoping to build the brand using North American TV deals.
MLS has to hope a lot of things go right if they want to expand past 30 teams I think. Even at more than twenty it might be difficult.

i agree so if the league goes balls to the wall 30+ a 2 tier system would be the best option if the owners could agree on it.

Exactly. I want to keep how it is.

Because to be a top 5 or so soccer league, you have to be dropping big money for transfers. Look at how much of the EPL's money comes from outside the UK. Of course, the US TV market is much more lucrative, but big foreign deals will 100% be necessary to be anything more than an afterthought and be a really good league.
The other aspect of the a league with 30+ teams is wage inflation, especially if there is a cap in play (which I'm going to assume you're for since you want this to be as American as possible). Players want their share of the cap based on how good they are on a team. Your best players are always going to make up a certain percentage of the cap, more so than a valuation like in Europe (except DPs, of course).
I'm fine with being a bit different, but you have to look at how things operate. The NFL, NBA, and NHL have essentially no world-wide competition. The NHL-KHL is about as competitive as it gets, and the KHL is hurting badly. You can't act like MLS just has to compete with American sports because we ARE in an arms race of sorts to get players from Europe.
Basically, my opinion on MLS is that we have to Americanize the league for now while soccer's popularity grows. At some point in the future, the league will have to change though in order to compete globally. Soccer is such a great sport to monetize because you can play games more often than American football in stadiums of a similar size if you can get the fans to show up.

Long term no. But for the next decade I'm guessing it will be good enough. A great TV deal in the next five years could do wonders for the league.

I like the idea, and I'd love for it to be a promotion/relegation but the two conferences or four division system is much more likely. You could have 4 divisions of 8 teams, with teams in the division playing twice a season, and playing teams outside the division once a season, which I think will give you around 38 games. That way every team plays another once, and there can be a 16 team play off home and away, and will lead to lots of drama and excitement.

At least you get what the point im making
thinking the MLS will be a world power league with just money from the american networks is false.
The UK deal alone for the EPL is over a billion pounds a year. Then throw in the money from overseas.

Oh, also, along with our 30+ league with Divisions and conferences, we're eliminating ties, they're un-American and lame.
Every tied game will end regulation with an immediate penalty shoot out and we all go home.

Exactly... (besides, the original rules were weird, 3 pts for a loss, 1 pt for a shoot out win? wtf?
If you just have wins and losses, then you go by winning pct... like every other sports league in America with various tie breakers (starting with head-to-head.
