Yeah, but it sorta sucks not to have one. I was talking about this on the Leeds thread. Leeds is my team (I lived there), but they've been out of the EPL for a decade. It's time to accept that I root for a Championship team and find an EPL team to root for on the side.
My advice on picking a team is "Be honest with yourself." Only five teams have a legit shot of ever winning the title. I don't mean now, I mean ever. Only five teams have won the title since the EPL was created in 1992, and on of those was Blackburn in 1995, before the economic effects of the Premiership really took hold. Since that initial five year period, only five clubs have even finished top 3 (except Leeds in 2000). There are only five clubs who can win. You have to understand that.
Those five are Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool (who has never won EPL). If you ever want to see a team win the title, you have to choose one of those five.
If you are willing to scale back what success is, and be legitimately satisfied with a team that maxes out with finishing top 4/5 and getting a place in Champions League, then you could root for that next tier: Everton, Newcastle, Villa, Spurs, Sunderland, and West Ham. Those six teams are of varying quality, but they are unlikely to be relegated and are pretty solid, consistent Premiership sides. They all have rich histories and have decent support, even in the States.
But take it from a Leeds fan, don't flirt with a team that is likely to get relegated. It sounds cool until it happens to you, and it's almost impossible to follow a team in the second division. Crystal Palace is cool and all, but eventually, we know how this story ends. And I'm not trying to belittle them. Hell, I'd kill for Leeds to be a yo-yo squad. But it's brutal to root for and very difficult to follow.

There's not a lot of really good matchups this weekend, but Liverpool/Southampton has an interesting story line. Liverpool bought 3 of Southampton's best players this summer (Lambert, Lallana, and Lovren).

Very well put. As a villa fan I am always rooting for top 8 finish. I feel like that is what a good season is for us. Hoping that we can get some better players in who could get us to a possible Champions League one day.

Liverpool has 2 American's in their academy: Marc Pelosi and Brooks Lennon. Lennon made his debut for the U-21 team today and impressed a lot of people based on what I've read.

I try to follow the Bundesliga, mostly Gladbach, but will start paying more attention once FOX gets the rights in 2015.

Yeah, I think so. Really, I think the only true bandwagon jump is Man U, but I hate Man U with almost every fiber of my being.
Of the 22 EPL season, Man U has won the title 13 times. They finished second five other times. That means in 18 of 22 seasons, Man U has been in the top two. Only once, last year, did they not finish top 3. Man U are the Yankees on crack.

I'm not going to start a new thread, but I've got the same question as OP.
I'm down to two. Spurs or Villa. Neither will look TOO bandwagony (especially Villa) but still have history/won't be relegated.
I'm leaning towards Spurs because of Yedlin/more realistic chance of winning the League. Anyone have thoughts one way or another?

This will always turn a thread in a totally different direction.
Really, the differences in terms of ranking them don't matter all that much since they've always tended to be cyclical and there's great, prestigious, mediocre and simply bad teams in all of the top 4 leagues.
There are noticeable differences between all the leagues in style of play but that's also probably for another thread.
I watch mainly Italian Serie A but am in the minority here. There's also some people who mainly follow German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga.
