Altidore, Dempsey and Bradley up front. The middle of the pitch gives us problems. Let those three work the offense and stay regularly on the attack and the rest of the squad can handle defense.
Granted this assumes that Altidore is in shape to play.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't remember Jurgen ever fielding a team with 3 at the back. You think he would decide to break that out in the last 16 of the World Cup, after advancing from that group while playing with a 4 man back line? I don't hate the idea, but it would take major balls.

We've never played a 3 man back line, and we're not going to start in the knockout rounds of the WC.

Exactly. The last two times we've used a 3 man back line to see out games, we've given up goals (Portugal and Nigeria). Running a 3 man back line is difficult. It's not plug and play.

I think we need to have 2 strikers up top. I don't think we can have Deuce as the lone striker in this game and still press the attack in the manner which we need.

Never said it WOULD happen or even that I want to see it. I just think it's an intriguing idea considering who we have in the squad.

What if we put Bradley back in holding midfield - where he is better? Take Bedoya out of the lineup in favor of Diskerud. Assuming Jozy cannot go...

If you're talking about a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, it would be tactical suicide to play the back 3 as Beasley-Beasler-Johnson, if that's what you're suggesting...

eta: I also made it pretty clear I don't want to try 3 at the back. It would just be fun to test out (not now, obviously) with some of these versatile midfielders.

No, my idea was Besler, Gonzo, and Cameron as the back three. Beckerman and Jones in front of them as CDMs. Fabian and Zusi as RM and LM. Bradley at CAM. Altidore and Dempsey up top.

Yeah there's absolutely no chance we play a 3 man back line. It's something you try out when you have a string of friendlies to work with.
If we practiced it, I think we have some of the components to make it work. Fabian would be a legit wingback, and something like Besler-Brooks-Cameron as a back three could theoretically work.
I wonder if a diamond with Beckerman at the base, Jones and Bradley shuttling, and Mix at the top might work. Might be worried that Bradley gets pulled too far wide too often.
The positives would be it would leave our two most tireless players (Jones and Bradley) playing the box to box positions, and Mix would add a bit of creativity (and theoretically lessen some of the burden on Bradley).
I don't expect to see it though.

Cameron would be interesting for that libero position. Good enough on the ball to spray passes around, as well as good enough positionally. Also would give us the ability to push him into midfield and make a back four rather quickly. If we drilled it enough in the month or so before the WC it would have been a useful option, but it would be absolute suicide to employ it at this tournament.
