Was the U-23 perfomance last night a reflection of Jurgen's youth development?

First thing, why is was our team so much smaller and slower?

If it wasn't for Keyln Acosta at least trying to be offensive, we wouldn't have done anything. There wasn't a midfielder with balls on that field. All the mid fielders just played like they were on a local park rec league "take the ball and hurry up and get rid of it"

What we had like 0 shots in the first half? I don't even remember us getting in the box in the first half. That was a terrible showing for our so called up and coming talent.

Maybe the only other good performances was the 1000 saves by Horvath and the red headed step child demolishing columbianos.

bc Colombia that's why

but other than that it never should have got to the point we needed to be in a playoff in the first place

No its a reflection and a wake up call to how far behind we still are but progress is being made.

Does not playing in Rio suck? Yes b/c the more experience the better. But the U-23's in terms of youth is pretty irrelevant b/c most quality players are fighting for senior team call ups at that age. And at 23 they should be full on pro's not still at their youth academy unless you are playing kids well under age.

U-21's, U-19's and U-17's is where we need to be focusing more on how those age groups progress.

We are obviously behind the eight ball when it comes to development, but I find it odd that we had only missed one Olympics before Jurgen and now we've missed two in a row. But yeah, the embarrassing part is losing to the likes of El Salvador, Canada, and Honduras at this level, not Colombia.

He's been here less than 5 years, so no it's not a reflection of his youth development plan. I'm not saying he's good or his youth plan will be effective but these guys aren't a product of his system imo. As a matter of fact his mandated changes to youth programs doesn't go into effect until August this year basically. (birth year team formation, field sizes, # of players on field, etc).

Like I said the more experience the better but I don't put much stock in the Olympic soccer because of the age. Some countries don't even bother and lets not forget the team GB fiasco.

exactly that might just be down to coaching

The Olympics is still a great chance for our players to test themselves in a competitive tournament, while getting themselves more exposure to clubs abroad.

I'd say it's more on Herzog for letting it get to this point. How much has a guy like Hyndman been part of Jurgen's youth development? Very little. The U17 team would be a better argument for this.

our youth teams do pretty well I would say. It's not surprising for our u-15-17 to beat world powers.

But then again some countries don't even bother or don't send the best U-23 roster they could.

But I do agree the more matches the better.

If you ever watch our U-15's to U-19's

those boys hold their own on the field with just about everyone and just think a good amount of those kids are not even old enough to move to a European youth set up yet, then throw in the MLS academies getting better in say 10 years or so we will be fine.

the tie vs Colombia shows how far behind we are in the overall scope of things

not making the Olympics is more down to coaching and you could probably also say other countries in the region are also improving how they develop players.

Look at the U-20 world cup shows we have made strides but are still behind.

A U-23 tourney with 3 over age players isn't the end of the world when you don't make it.

I'm sure now that Klings has implimented his birth year initiative, the US will now be able to identify the better players, earlier. ??

I wonder how many U23 guys colombia has playing for their senior team. Have to think we don't look so outmatched if guys like Brooks, Yedlin, Wood, Green, Zelalem, and Pulisic are on the pitch

Know what will make this country great at soccer??

Scraping this absurd pay to play model for starters

I played with and against lots of Hispanic kids in HS in which HS ball was their first time playing actual organized soccer. It was insanely obvious too. A player would be amazing on a technical level b/c he has had a ball at his feet since he could walk but had no idea how to play as a team or cohesive unit or any concept of space and making runs. He would rather just ball hog.
