Ream, Goodson, Cameron all better than Gooch for me.
Have to replace Boca too.

Gooch is done, we are too slow. I feel like we will match up well with some of the european teams. Brazil is just that good and always will be.

Replace Goodson with Cameron. Goodson is Gooch 2.0, extremely slow, decent in the air and on set pieces.

Lichaj will be in the setup too to cover for old man Cherundolo.

ETA: Ream is also in the fold for the backline. He did well for Bolton this year.

Bradley looked amazing. Edu didn't. Gomez did. Gooch didn't.

Don't start Edu next game. Maybe move to 4-4-2? Gomez was super sharp, Wondo hasn't been tested, and we have Jozy as well. We could try the diamond midfield we used against Slovenia with Clint in the advanced position. My concern would be the wing, but Bradley has played right wing (well) for us before. Jones could start in the more defensive role. Donovan on the left. Cameron starts against Canada.

Not next week, but in the next 2 years if we want to compete with the likes of Brazil.

I don't think the USA played well at all.

Brasil took their foot off the gas as far as defensive pressure in the second half. They did whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it.

Brasil has WAY more speed than USA. Not even close. This is where USA is hurt by our best athletes choosing Baseball/basketball/football among other sports.

Score could have easily been 6/7-1.

We need to get Marcelo and Balotelli and Joey Barton together. That would be fun.

Im only talking about these next matches, but Ream should definitely get some time soon.

Im also good with Cameron instead of Goodson.

Lichaj and Johnson as our fullbacks will be really dangerous, cant wait to see them play together.

Not bad, but i'm thinking that you keep Bradley where he is. Seems like he is really flourishing there. If we had better defensive play tonight and had even one of those fluke misses at the goal actually go in, we're talking a completely different game.

But we gotta do something about Gooch - moving Edu may not be a bad idea either.

We may NEVER "compete" with the likes of Brasil.

Changing one player won't affect that.

Not sure I completely agree. 10-15 years ago you could really make that argument, but i think with a population of 300+ million we can find about 20 or so fast dudes that can play. Even with competition in other sports.

A big problem is getting the youth academies here in the US straight and teaching the fundamentals that the Dutch, Spanish and English academies preach.

I think we are getting there, though.

Would a 4-4-2 with Gomez up top with Jozy work? Let Jozy play back to goal and let Gomez make runs off of him with Donovan and Dempsey supporting from the wing.

Gooch has to go and I just feel that Edu is our 3rd CM and wouldn't play if we had Dempsey and Jozy available for 90.

We did not see the same game. Brazil converted all of their chances outside of Howard's stop on the 1-on-1 against Hulk and the side post shot, while the US was robbed twice by the goalkeeper (the Gomez and Boyd shots, Bradley's header), was unlucky on Gooch's header hitting the crossbar, and Dempsey's finish when he first came in the game.

It could have been 6-4, maybe. 6-1 only if you cherry pick positive "what ifs" for Brazil and negative "what ifs" for the U.S.

The team is a lot of fun to watch right now, and the pieces are just starting to fit together. My problems are a) Gooch absolutely sucks in defense and when paired with a slower Bocanegra, it leads to a lot of holes in transition and b) Edu turns the ball over way too much.

We have a lot of options in central midfield, so we can experiment with Edu's replacement.

As for central defense, I am worried. I don't like any of our options one bit. Cameron, Ream, Goodsen, Gooch...they all suck. Bocanegra is good enough to be the second defender on a good team but nothing more, at this point.

To be fair to Gooch, he was a really poor choice for this game, given Brazil's 1-2 quickness. He just can't get his hips around that quickly.

He still did REALLY well in the air on both ends, and in the tackle, when the opportunity presented itself, and we can benefit greatly against many teams with that.

I don't know that Cameron, Goodson or Ream really would have provided more.

We're very big and extremely athletic compared to pretty much every national team in the world

Agreed, but we give up way too many counter-attacking goals against elite sides. Mexico has their best NT unit of the past 15 years right now, so they can be included in as well. The Gold Cup final last year was an abomination although Bornstein playing left back and Lichaj playing RB out of position had a lot to do with that.
