He moved up top to win headers bro. He only stayed up top for the last 3 minutes of the game.
It was longer than that, and it's the same terrible tactic we used at the end of the Gold Cup match vs. Jamaica. Just substitute Gordon for Brooks.

The 3 forwards that were with the team were on the field.
Didn't Brooks score on a header from a corner kick in the world cup??????
Brooks will win a header over 95 percent of the time. The obvious plan was to throw in as many crosses as possible.

That's part of the problem.

Yes, a corner kick. Not from the normal run of play.

Doesn't this go against everything we have been told we're working on?

Unless it's on a throw in into the box against Jamaica.

it's really not uncommon for teams to put a centerback up front late in games when they're behind. no idea why that is drawing so much ire from some. barça does it with pique all the time.
and roster selection had literally nothing to do with why we were outclassed in that game. no matter how much the Matthew Doyle's of the world have his loyal followers convinced it's not a talent problem, it 100% is.

Arsenal did it with Mertesacker last year against Monaco when they needed a goal to advance in the CL.

Matt Doyle offers his critique of the team and its performance. He is critical of the players but appears to lay most of the blame on the management. He points out several issues and offers some video as illustration. A summary of his points:
- USMNT cannot out-skill the better opponents and has abandoned the strategy of outrunning them so we must try to outsmart them; management is failing at this.
- Our movement off the ball is abysmal.
- We do not play well together as a team; there is severe lack of coordination. We have 11 players on the pitch playing as individuals.
- Shelton is being played out of position; he should be on the wing.
- Tall needs to be playing as a forward with his back to goal.
- Zelalem is skilled but he does not work hard.
- Kiesewetter plays with aggression but he needs to take the next step now.
- Green plays timid; he will never play (significantly) for Bayern's first team.
- USMNT drops its line too deep allowing opponents easy passing and buildup. This is a problem at all levels of the USMNT.
- Brooks has talent but continues to zone out in games; he is mentally undisciplined.
- We have no plan; the idea of continuously launching balls at Brooks' head like we did with Gordon is embarrassing.
- We are not progressing; management has no solution as of now.

I feel like Chelsea has done it like 20 times this year with Zouma.

Matthew Doyle is a colossal hack who pushes his very narrow view of the situation into literally every place he can stick it. his obsession with klinsmann is pathological and his delusions about our talent pool are revealing as all hell. he literally thinks if we put in mls darlings like feilhaber and followed his, again incredibly narrow ideas of how the game should be played we'd be an elite side. notice he gives no credit to a Brazilian team that was full of budding world class superstars even though they were playing a bunch of b team nobodies. you can't analyze our place in the world without acknowledging the extreme talent deficit, which he explicitly and aggressively ignores in every analysis.
he's good at following the mls and analyzing tactics, but his usmnt work is delusional at best, in large part because he has a comically inflated opinion of the quality of the league.
I'm not even going to get info how bizarre it is to hold the national team coach, who spends less than two months a year with the players, responsible for developing our talent, but suffice to say, Doyle is not half as informed as he thinks he is. I know I'll get pushback on this but not every criticism is valid. and when an individual reaches the obsessive levels he has with klinsmann, while never acknowledging the flaws of the mls and our absolute garbage talent pool, you have to take a step back and recognize he's pushing an agenda more than offering up valid criticism.
again, look at the names on Brazil's u23 roster. look at the clubs they play for, their stats, their valuations. and now look at the us roster. it's like a college team playing the pros the gulf on class is so wide. and then read his analysis where it's all "top down identity," tactics, roster selection. he's delusional.
sorry for the rant but mls fans and the klinsmann haters elevate this guy to some kind of authority on the team and honestly, it's ridiculous. he's also notorious for contradicting himself just so he can claim "I told ya so" after the fact. wish he would stick to mls.

You realize that MLS writes this guy's paycheck, right? He's not going to be overly critical of the league.

No one has said this, but adding Feilhaber to the team over the last 3 years would have been a big upgrade.

of course I do, but that's exactly my point. he's not writing about mls, he's writing about usmnt and ppl act like he's some bastion of critical integrity when he's pushing his agenda. an agenda that is naive, ill informed, and damaging to domestic perception of our talent pool.
like imagine writing up that game from last night, blaming it all on players like zelalem, green, etc's lack of effort, blaming it all on "the top down lack of identity" without ever mentioning how much better the Brazilian talent pool is. is it really that our coaches have no idea how the game works or is there a slight possibility our players weren't able to execute it due to being completely outclassed by a loaded Brazil u23 side. it's common sense.
yet he shits all over anyone who suggests this to him and continues pushing his shite, always hiding behind vague platitudes like "I simply don't believe the USA is incapable of producing good players...it's the system they're played in." again, that's absurdly delusional, first because no one is saying we're incapable theoretically, but more importantly, because to anyone who follows the sport, we clearly don't have a single world class player in the system.
how can you build your whole career around blaming tactics and coaches and roster selection while ignoring this insurmountable reality? that is my problem with him.
if he would admit that he is paid to be an mls cheerleader and that all of his analysis of our national team is really just him knighting for the league, fair enough. I'd roll my eyes and look the other way. but that's not how he presents his analysis. and a lot of lesser informed fans who mean well read it like the gospel. they really do think someone like feilhaber is world class, which...lol, how does that help anything?

feilhaber has had a great couple years in mls. he previously had a chance to break into the team under Bradley, who didn't like his attitude and then had a chance under klinsi, who also passed. he will be 33 in 2018.
I am not saying there weren't times he could've been called, but anyone who thinks feilhaber is a difference maker on the international stage needs to get a grip.

like reading his "objective" analysis of the game, he makes it sound like our u23 team should be holding 60% of the ball against a Brazilian midfield that was literally better than our senior team's midfield. and that the only reason we don't do it is because zelalem is a pussy and klinsmann lacks of a cohesive philosophy has ruined our whole system. klinsmann, who wasn't even coaching the game.
that's not valid criticism. that is fricking ludicrous.

yeah, but we didn't lose because of the coach. we were outclassed by a substantially more talented team. no coach was going to roll into that stadium with that talent and boss the game. why are we talking about everything but the most important thing?

Feilhaber DID break into the squad under Bradley, and was basically part of that team from 2007 to 2011, until, you know, Jurgen showed up and decided to ostracize him in his prime. He's the best American player in MLS. Your age argument means nothing because Jurgen will fight tooth and nail to have a 36 year old Jermaine Jones playing at the 2018 WC.
What's your deal with Doyle? Just drop it. We get you don't like him. Just don't read his articles. It's that easy.
