Thoughts?

For what it’s worth, here is my USMNT best XI as things stand:

—– Steffen —–

— Dest — Long — Brooks — Robinson —

—- Adams —- McKennie —-

—- Reyna —- Musah —- Pulisic —-

—– Sargent —–

It's more like:

Steffen
Dest-Long-Brooks-Robinson
Adams
McKennie-Musah
Reyna-Sargent-Pulisic

McKennie and Musah are more shuttling 8's.

This is the first time in quite a while where there isn't much debate for like 8 or 9 spots in the XI (Richards vs Long, Sargent vs Dike and Reyna vs Aaronson/Weah), but for the first time it's not because we have no depth, but because the guys in our XI are really good and really young.

That Gold Cup roster will be much more intriguing than the Nations League roster, because we are going to see a lot of new faces, a lot fringe guys and some returning faces who we haven't seen in a bit.

Will any of our top 15 guys play in the Gold Cup? And will they have the rule where you can bring in new players in the elimination rounds again?

I could see some MLS-based guys like Lletget and Long. And maybe some of our high-profile young guys who aren't in our XI yet like Richards and Aaronson.

But who really knows how Gregg approaches it.

I think they got rid of this. I know they didn't do it in 2019. And I highly doubt they do it with COVID-testing still a thing.

The scuffed podcast’s most recent episode is on this topic. They speculate the locked in starters/first bench options go to the nations league and the third/fourth choice guys may end up being at the gold cup so they can actually play. That leaves the fifth/sixth place guys for their positions potentially as depth pieces for the nations league. Interesting idea and good if you want the guys on the fringes of making an impact to actually play this summer.

Musah is not a winger.

Really wish someone would tell Valencia that.

Westin had that exact lineup as what he wanted to see in a recent interview w/DMB.

I like the idea of having Reyna or Pulisic as a 10 and flexing between the wing on one side or the other.

That squad would be deadly playing counter attacking football or playing a high press

I really wish Gregg wold stop the square peg in round hole and trying to turn this into a play out the back possession team like it’s Pep with City or Barca

We should be playing to our strengths

Why would they not all play? I know it’s common to field weak Gold Cup sides, but our current roster is young and has hasn’t played much together. I’d rather get them the experience.

I really don’t think we are still the kind of team that can thrive when we sit low and counter. I think we play best in a high press like you otherwise mentioned, but I am still not comfortable with seeing us against a team that has the ability to dominate possession to break us down.

I think we finally have the goal scoring ability to stand toe-to-toe with many teams. I agree that we won’t always be able to play out of the back, but I don’t think we should EVER play a low block with our LB or even CB position depth being what it is.

Those are arguably to two worst spots on the field for us outside of striker, and even that is debatable with the rise of Dike and the ability of Weah to step in.

Counter attacking doesn’t mean have to sit low and defend at first

You can break out of anything

Yea using the pace and athleticism to swarm teams works for what we have

Yup but it just sucks we don’t get tested on the regular unless it’s Mexico

And playing out the back for our build up is gonna bit us in the arse vs Mexico or any other good team

Some matches yea

I hope it becomes this squads main style

But the manager is hell bent on making them look like possession team that plays out the back

Honestly that will work vs the shitty teams in our federation

Vs the legit countries not so much

We need to nail down an identity

They've been exclusively in a high press since January camp 2020.

Yea MLS camp don’t count though

Since covid we have had what maybe 4 matches of what would be considered the A squad

Even then we still dicked around trying to build up out the back

The Klopp style high press is perfect for us, force the opponent to frick up in their half and pounce on them.

This is such a dumb qualifier considering we hardly played high press in previous camp cupcakes.

Yeah. I’m definitely going to disagree with you there.

That’s the textbook definition of a counter-attack. You draw them into their attacking half/third, close the space, win possession and counter out of it.

If you want to win the ball higher up the field (say immediately after you lose possession) that would be called counter pressing.

You don’t have to be sitting back taking on pressure to be a counter attacking side

Plenty of examples of teams who play counter attacking and don’t sit deep
