To an extent, the US men’s image has never recovered from Lalas’s blistering “tattooed millionaires” rant when the team was on its way to World Cup qualification failure in 2017. Much of the team has retired since then, but Lalas also singled out “Wonderboy” Christian Pulisic, who should be in his prime.

We have several that contribute overseas and play at the highest levels against the top competition. The problem is when you bring them back and put them all together, they play like Americans!

I'd argue (and so does the article) that they absolutely do not play like Americans, at least not in the romanticized version we all grew up on where they fight like hell with a chip on their shoulder.

The writer was almost spot on, minus the activism part, he probably couldn't help himself but we don't give AF about that, we just want a winner.

Not sure it was “romanticized”, as those American teams 92-2016 were definitely outmatched and outskilled on most pitches, but collectively were way more than the sum of their parts due to grit, luck, and perseverance. Mixed with American bravado.

Thread title is accurate.
I miss those teams that wanted it so badly.

What do you/y'all think has changed?
The current generation playing overseas and not struggling for individual identity and breaking away from the old American adage of under-skilled?
Loss of patriotism?
Early success or continued success in their careers?
New generation of players not playing with heart?

It is some combination of all that, save the patriotism. That was never an issue, and likely still isn't. But the rest of it, yes, especially the last one--the lack of heart at the international level.

It’s interesting. Having never been in the past teams locker rooms. Nor the current ones.

I do not know the dynamic between the players.

However what I have read it seems like this group is more closely friends with each other and hang out online and communicate with each other more often and more frequently than previous generations.

It is a bit perplexing. One would want to think that the lack of effort is an entitlement / participation trophy culture thing...but these guys are mostly all playing on good teams in Europe. They had to prove themselves to get there...
