I know FIFA rankings are complete rubbish, but for what it's worth we're now "ahead" of Mexico in the latest rankings.

I agree, but FIFA rankings mean close to nothing. I think with the talent and coaching we have, we're genuinely better than our neighbors to the south.

No question. Two teams heading in opposite directions it seems.

People need to stop saying this. Its simply not true. They are an objective, formula-based ranking that ultimately decides which pool you are in for the the WC. That being said frick Mexico, aka America's Hemorrhoid.

They only say it when it doesn't fit their narrative.

Much like the morons who insist recruiting rankings mean nothing when their team doesn't finish high and rave about how the coaches got who they want and are great at findingg the "diamonds in the rough". Then, and this is my favorite, they will go back like 5 years to cite the one 2 star player who ended up being a star and the 5 star guy that ended up being a bust as proof.

Well of course they mean something, they determine who is in what WC group you are drawn into. And there is a formula, it's just that the formula is retarded. It's hard to come up with a formulaic ranking system when all the variables aren't the same. Not everyone plays the same amount of competitive matches.

Brazil is basically being punished for having automatically qualified by hosting the damn thing. Croatia and Columbia are not better than Brazil.

USA needs to move up to what, 16, to be in the 2nd tier for WC draws? They are very close numbers wise to those teams now (30 points moves us to 15).

How does one acquire points between now and the WC? Just win your qualifying games and friendlies??

Theoretically yes, however due to the formula (whatever it may be), it often happens that you can win a game and still lose points at the end.

Not sure where y'all are coming up with this seeding stuff

Top 8 teams are in a pot together. The rest are seperated basically by confederations to ensure that 2 teams from the same continent (other than Europe due to their disproportionate represantation) don't get drawn together.

FIFA rankings still don't matter until we start approaching the top 8 spots.

They matter in UEFA qualifying for WC and EURO. There's 6 pots divided based on FIFA rankings. France fell into Pot 2 and was grouped with Spain. They now most likely have to go through the playoff to qualify for WC, not as easy at seems if you think back to Henry's handball goal in the playoff vs Ireland.

I honestly have no idea. I was just going with what the dude above me said.

They do matter in terms of the top 8 seeds for the WC or whatever it is. But they are not reliable. Columbia is nasty, but not 3rd best team in the world nasty.

Pretty sure they are automatically put in Pot 1 as the host nation

Ecuador is not a top 25 team. The rankings may hold true for some, but most are not. Outside of say, the top 50; how in the world are they accurately ranked? There's no possible way. As someone mentioned earlier, creating a formula with inconsistent variables isn't effective. The rankings do, however, show an accurate perception of who the top teams are in the world. I just can’t agree with a specific rank for all teams.

frick Mexico.
