Uh, what's up with the gay pride numbers on the US Jerseys?

I mean, why do this? Is this supposed to encourage the average US sports fan to want to tune in? Or, do they just like perpetuating the image of soccer as the "gay" sport?

I like soccer, and it was my sport growing up. I just know the average US sports fan is not really into watching soccer, and many people snicker about it being "gay." But, mainly I'm just wondering why they feel there is a need to correlate the US Soccer team with gay pride.
Can anyone just explain?
P.S., I'm not going to "turn away" and I'm not homophobic. I just wonder why the need to even mix apples with doorknobs.

It's to symbolize that everyone is welcome to play. Many players, staff, fans, etc. are gay. They've worn the rainbow jerseys in previous years, but this summer's World Cup is in a country that is staunchly anti-gay.
