if he doesn't get the ball on his challenge, that's a red and PK no matter what. he didn't get a red because of a dangerous challenge. i guess i don't get your point.

They're saying a PK is enough and there doesn't need to be a red. I'm saying that if he's making more a clear attempt to get the ball instead of barging into Robben, it's maybe just a yellow.

Maybe I have to see another replay but it looked to me like he just took out Robben with little regard for the ball.

My question is: why is Szczeny's foul considered denying a clear goal scoring opportunity, whereas Boateng's is not?

If I'm remembering correctly, there were other defenders in the box incase Özil does get by Boateng. Also could have something to do with Szczeny's studs being up in the challenge.

Exactly it's such a stupid rule. Also, how is it denying a goal scoring opportunity at all? Giving away a pk is giving the opponent the best possible goal scoring opportunity there is

Well except in this herp-derp fest of a first half.

The worst part is that no one is talking about how badass that ball from Kroos was to set up that chance.

Had a second look at the red card. It was a bad foul from Szczesny. My initial reaction was he was little slow in making a legitimate effort to win the ball. Second look showed he had no chance at the ball and intentionally clipped Robben. Good call I think.

Yaya SanagBRO looks like a promising inclusion in the Bro XI along with fellow BROhemians playing today like ThiagBRO Alcantara and Mesut BRÖzil.

Not the best view but he just went straight through Robben with his cleat up in the air. I know I'm biased but I'm not sure how that isn't a red card.

I´m not watching replays at half, because I don´t want to see the Atlético score.

It looked to me he in´s the air, studs out (his left foot anyway), and gets his leg.

Robben made the most of it, that´s his job.

If he doesn´t leave his feet, tackles him (as long as it doesn´t look blatantly obvious, and looks as if he´s going for the ball), I think he´s get a yellow.

Even if he leaves his feet, but doesn´t impact him with the studs, I could see it only being a yellow (again, with it looking like he´s going for the ball).

It was beautiful, but a tad long.

i'm not sure they're talking specifically, just the general argument that a red + a PK is a ridiculously harsh punishment for any challenge.

Szcz absolutely deserved a red there but it was for denying a goal scoring chance. robben was through. ozil wasn't. different angles, more defenders in the box. i think the ref got both calls right. now after boateng's last foul, if he has one that's remotely sketch, i'm gonna want the letter of the law implemented and a second yellow given

In many cases, it's only a marginally better opportunity than what the fouled player was faced with. That's kind of the point. Defenders and goalkeepers shouldn't be allowed to act with virtual impunity when a player is clearly in on goal.

It's practice at that. This country has their priorities fricked up. Good thing DirecTV has FS2.

It's too bad we don't have another center back because Jerome is a count hair away from being sent off.
