Toughest players on the pitch: center mid, sweeper or keeper?

What toughness are you talking about? Mental toughness, physical toughness, technical/tactical toughness?
Keeper is by the most mentally tough position to play, but physically I'd say a defensive mid is the toughest

If your team plays with an actual sweeper-stopper you are probably gay so that cannot be the answer.
Keepers are batshit crazy. Center mids (my true love) are prima Donna skill players by the large. True defensive center mids like jermaine jones can be pretty bad arse though.

I just found this board, pretty excited since soccer is my true love.
Keepers are pretty tough but they get to use their hands and don't have to run. I think the "sweeper" of every team is usually the toughest. They are usually pretty physical and aren't afraid to put their head on the ball in any situation which is the true sign of toughness IMO.

And every intramural league ever. There's always bound to be some center back who sweeps forward into the middle third to quickly start a counter attack. Hate to break it to you guys, but you don't have to line up behind the middle of a back 3 to be considered a sweeper.

Keepers are probably one of the more intimidating players on the pitch, and they have to be. They can't be out-toughened (lack of better words) in their 18 yard box. IMO, they have the most mentally tough position in the world in any sport. The amount of pressure that they have to pursue is beyond me, especially at such high stake matches in pro leagues.
I still agree with WSE, though. A guy like Yaya Toure or Alex Song has to be tough up and down the whole pitch. They're supposed to be the "wrecker" type player, while still maintaining the fitness and technical abilities.

it means that "sweeper" is a position that shitty teams with shitty coaches use and it is a terrible excuse for tactics.

No, he isn't. It's the same as if you play with wing-backs. Yeah according to the formation there are 5 at the back, but its the way you play the position that means something, not where you sit in the paper lineup.
If a center-back is sweeping up into attack to start a counter consistently, and the other CB is moving in behind to cover him he's effectively playing a sweeper position.
