Tell that to Serie A for 3/4 of its existence. Seemed to work pretty damned well for them. And even when the Dutch came along to counter it with their Total Football it evolved into the Zona Mista.

If you think only terrible coaches have used sweepers then I'm convinced you've only been watching soccer for the past 10 years. It was the leading defensive tactic for close to 30 years in world football.
