The top four in the Premier League will gain direct passage into the Champions League group stages, UEFA has confirmed.
The changes are set to be introduced for the start of the 2018-19 competition, which will also see the top four teams in Spain, Italy and Germany skip the qualifying rounds.

26 teams (rather than 22) now gain direct entry into group stages, which includes competition winners.
- Only six qualifying spots in the group stages are up for grabs, rather than 10.
- A new preliminary round has been added to the qualifying phase.
- The competition will run on staggered match times, similar to the Europa League.

In a further announcement, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has insisted there will be no use of VAR next season.
'Fans see the VAR screen all the time but nobody knows how it works,' he said. 'We will not use it in the Champions League next season. For me, it might be a good project but we shouldn't rush it.'

So this is saying the 4th place Serie A team will qualify this year?

I thought this had already been confirmed as part of concessions to the big clubs threatening the super league

Makes sense for England and Spain and maybe Italy. 4th in Germany is typically a Europa level side though.

Most the time they make it through the qualifying round.
This year just bad luck of the draw.

Good. One of the major things I like about soccer over the big American sports is that celebrations can be organic. In a football game, you always have to worry about a play being called back. So, even if there is a TD, in the back of your mind you know it might not count. I'd honestly rather just have a few incorrect calls than all the confusion of VAR.

4th in Germany this season is going to be one of Schalke, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Leipzig or Monchengladbach. At least three of those are Champions League group stage teams on a regular basis.
All four countries usually have deserved teams in their top-four. France gets dicey past three, and sometimes its third is a wild card.

The automatic qualifiers to the group stage, for those interested...
For 2018/19 they will be ...
UEFA Champions League holders (1)
UEFA Europa League holders (1)
Top four from associations ranked 1st to 4th: Spain, Germany, England, Italy (16)
Top two from associations ranked 5th and 6th: France, Russia (4)
Champions of associations ranked 7th to 10th: Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey (4)
Another sign of just how far Dutch soccer is falling. And just one automatic spot in Portugal is going to be interesting.
ETA: Jeez, the Dutch league has fallen to 14th in the recent coefficients. They're 13th in the ones they used for this format. The Czech league (!!!) has passed it. They don't even get one of the access spots in the Europa League anymore.
ETA2: Much easier to show it this way.

And Celtic get screwed because the little teams in Scotland don't give a frick about even fielding a team for their European matches.

Celtic’s own European performances every year prove the Scottish champ needs to go through the full qualifying.

Lower in the coefficient than Belarus and Israel. Man.

Couldn’t even get out of its Europa group a couple years ago

And the majority of the shite countries above Scotland in coefficient points haven't had a club get out of a Europa group in five years.

Those are the big takeaways to me. I'm torn about the 6 teams thing - obviously its less spots to qualify for some of those smaller countries teams - but at the same time now they won't have to play a Liverpool/Napoli etc. type team to try to get in. Probably a net positive.
Staggered time slots - clearly to try to drive up some bidding rights - but also I have to wonder if the group games are becoming less and less valuable to TV and so its really about trying to keep the value of the deal in place.
