"Won't have to visit the chiropractor since the Spanish players took care of that for me"

Paraphrased.

Commercials in the 5 minutes since the match ended:
Alex Morgan - 2
Megan Rapinoe - 0

Wonder if that dude is watching

How is it soft?

Yeah, I'm with the soft crowd on this one. Slow-Mo replay makes it look a lot worse than it is.

Also, the USA player taking a few steps then going down makes me think twice about calling it a pen as well.

No way we beat France playing like that.

Maybe but France has looked like that pretty much the whole tournament.

Had Mexico or any CONMEBOL team done that, we'd be raising hell.

It shouldn't have been a pen.

My exact thoughts.

Because she barely touched her.

The attempt by itself constitutes a foul. It's a foul pretty much everywhere on the field. Contact isn't necessary for a foul to be given. The flight path of the ball is irrelevant to the awarding of the foul. If that happened by the center circle, no one would question that it was a foul either.

It was a make up call for the fact that Spain should have gotten 10+ yellow and red cards and got one yellow.

To be fair, I wasn't able to watch the match.
Just saw the replay of the incident. So that's my unbiased take on it with no outside factors taken into account.

The last chance by Spain deserved a look by VAR.

What?

It wasn't a pen.

Her attempt was to kick the ball.

Ehhhh... I don’t care how light it is, getting swiped with studs is going to cause most to go down

Probably, but we've seen cards given against the US for similar attempts. Most notably Ricardo Clark against Italy at the Confed Cup in 2009. Clark was similarly late with a high boot, with contact incidental. Referees generally always call high challenges.

When Alex Morgan jokes that she doesn't need to visit the chiropractor due to the number of times she was "cracked in the back", read between the lines.

While I agree with you there, after watching multiple replays, I couldn't definitely say she got caught by the player's studs.

I think she got caught. But I also think it barely grazed her sock and she saw the opportunity to go down.

And? It was a reckless challenge that would be a foul everywhere else on the field.

That's not out of a Dickens novel. There's no lines to read through.

It was a foul and a spot kick was awarded. It's a foul to go high with the studs showing everywhere else on the field. I have no idea why anyone would think it wouldn't be a foul.

Sure, but contact also doesn't necessarily mean a foul. The minimal contact there was had zero impact on Lavelle's ability to go after the ball or control it in the first place.
