Again, a foul is a foul. It matters not the size of the player.

gaining a physical advantage over a player who is inferior physically is not a foul, though

it has BECOME a foul, but it isn't really a foul

just because one player can't compete for position doesn't mean it's a foul

quote:

Once the first foul is called, you've got an idea of how the official will be calling the match. You must act accordingly.

again, this is irrelevant to my point

the refs ARE calling fouls to give advantages to small players. it's become almost institutional

once the refs establish this (which they almost always do now), it basically eliminates the advantages of opponents and strengthens the advantages of the ticka tocka teams

that's my whole point. you can't create an institutional advantage for a style of play and then go, "well the other team should be better at our idiosyncratic style that we've perfected." it's a ruse, a fixed system

To put that into context, look at Greece's heat map against Germany:

Funny they literally never left the box and Germany still scored 4

Germany's:

Killer instinct

Once they went up a goal, that wasn't enough. They wanted 2, 3, 4 goals. They could have easily won that game 1-0 if they felt like it

I think you're confusing when one has possession, and typically is smaller, and receives a foul.

This is not a rigged system, this is proper officiating.

Jostling for position is very subjective, and again, it's important to read the official's read of the game.

For all your fouls which have become fouls, there are flagrant no calls and mistakes a plenty.

Case in Point (flagrant no call). The no call on Clichy's penalty yesterday was ghastly, this was a mistake of which I am convinced the ref purposefully chose to improperly call, in order to avoid a potential blow out.

Go on and say it already, officiating in the islands is different than the rest of the world.

I agree, but you must adjust (after all, you are talking about the world in comparison to one island, so the who is right question has no real answer, unless like many do herein, you appeal to statistics, which will say that the islanders are not right).

the whole point is that the "official's read of the game" is to not allow much jostling. that's the assumption/situation we are discussing

i think the continental game doesn't allow as much as the islands, but the iberian refereeing (and it's influence) is just as much of an outlier as the islands. they're like the 2 poles while the central/southern style is more in the middle

italian and german soccer is a lot more physical than spanish/portuguese soccer (but not nearly as much as the UK)

There are some good refs, and some bad refs, in Spain. I cannot speak for Portugal.

I highly doubt it influences the balance of the world.

it's more the domination of spain/barca, when they're playing

you even see it within la liga. real typically dominates possession but can out-physical teams...until they play barca. then they're resigned to playing back and hoping for a few counters (on the ground only)

I don't agree. A foul is a foul.

The problem stems from the dominion of the ball. Most in Spain dribble close to the body, leg, as they have great technical prowess.

The rest of the world, not so much.

I don't understand why people are arguing with Dandy about this. Spain has played a boring game for the last couple but they keep winning. I can't trash teams that win. No one is going to change his mind on whether Spain plays a beautiful game or not. :beatdeadhorse:

Being from Lexington, I understand your concern for the beating of the dead horse.

I'll be there in about two weeks BTW. In and out.

but i'm not arguing fouls committed when spain/barca are on offense. it's when they're on D

and of course they dribble closer, as they're really, really small

that USED to create disadvantages, but now their games are called to eliminate most of these

what is this, a physics based statement (larger people have larger feet, therefore the ball bounces further away from their foot when then control)?

it's closer to them because they have better dominion of the ball.

zidane wasn't a midget, you didn't see him handle the ball like in the majority of germany, italy, and all of england, did you?

Spain has been a power for like 5 years man, Johnny Come Latelys. Let's not compare them in the 80s and 90s to conventional powers. (minus England).

What the frick are you talking about? We're talking about physical dominion of the ball, not national sides of the 80s and 90s.

longer legs = further from body

quote:

well he's only possibly the best player of all time, and that's one reason that made him so great

that's one thing that made him an outlier in historical terms...same with ronaldo of today

quote:

well england is currently transitioning, but germany is completely different than they were 10 years ago. they're smaller/quicker...and better dribblers. there is a major correlation there

i have nothing against technical skills. i'm not an EPL-tard

but i want soccer where different styles are present, and not a particular style being pushed onto all teams, which we're seeing over the past 4 years.

Just using your own shtick against you. I feel like you've been a little perturbed lately that many people prefer to watch Germany's new style of play over Spain's.

I don't agree. Many are adopting it, it is 'avant garde', but it is merely a cycle.

Also, there are many sides who have success, that don't play this way.
