Arsenal and midfielder Jack Wilshere are set to agree on a three-year, heavily-incentivized contract extension that will see the player maintain his current wage of £100,000 per week if he meets a certain amount of appearances and minutes.

Santi Cazorla will leave Arsenal when his contract expires next month, the club has announced.

In a statement, CEO Ivan Gazidis said: "Santi is always one of my favourite players to watch. His natural ability with both feet, his speed of thought and movement were central to our best performances in recent years.

"He plays with a joy and freedom which is very rare. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his important contribution to our club.”

BREAKING: Arsenal to appoint Unai Emery as new manager. Thorough process produced 46yo Spaniard as unanimous choice. Available after leaving #PSG (1 Lg1 title, 4 cups), previously Sevilla (3 EL wins), not fluent English. Announcement + press conference likely later this week #AFC

I'm pleasantly surprised. He's experienced and has won trophies. This makes way more sense than Arteta. I can only hope for a few more surprises in the transfer market.

Ffs, had my body braced for an Arteta double next season now we get a Spanish reject that couldn’t win a farmers league. Smh.

Maybe we’ll win Europa for the next 6 years in a row

I guess the life and times of the shoestring budget we have is here to stay. Nevermind that Gazidis was supposed to raise the commercial income so we didn't have to rely on matchday and tournament income so much.

I imagine Emery will get about as much as he can from this team. Hopefully our defensive problems will be fixed.

If he can fix the defense I have faith that we’ll qualify for the champions league next year. We have the talent up front, I just hope he knows how to maximize our potential and put our key players on the field together.
Shouldn’t be too hard with a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.

Here’s to hoping he teaches defense and tracking back

Had you told me right off the bat that Arsenal was hiring Emery I would've have been slightly disappointed given the other candidates thought to be interested.

After all the Arteta, Henry, Viera, and whoever else rumors of the past week or so, I think I'm pretty ok with this move.

Some things about Emery.

quote:

Guillem Balague

@GuillemBalague

Emery is a coach first and foremost. He adapts to teams and his players. He's thorough/meticulous which by the way has been missing at AFC for a while. He'll add structure/purpose, players will learn of their obligations and responsibilities, will have 2 come out of comfort zone

quote:

Arsenal News HQ™

@ArsenalNews_HQ

Unai Emery's CV: Took Almería into La Liga for the first time, finishing 8th the following season.

Took Valencia to three consecutive 3rd place finishes in La Liga.

Won three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla.

PSG won the domestic treble under him this season.

quote:

Messi Minutes

@MessiMinutes

Joaquin on Unai Emery: “Emery put on so many videos I ran out of popcorn. He’s obsessed by football, it’s practically an illness. He’s one of the best managers I’ve had."

I'm not saying this is a slam dunk hire but I like it. Seems to have the traits we have been missing.

Also talk is it's a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd year. Smart. If Emery doesn't pan out we can act quickly.

Ok I'm all in.

Emery made it clear he planned to build his vision around 2 key players he regards as central to his plans - Aubameyang & Ramsey. Emery’s depth of knowledge of every #Arsenal player left Gazidis & his team gobsmacked — & overshadowed every other presentation, including Arteta

I like it. I only saw 2 PSG games last year..anyone know his style? I think they ran a 4-3-3. Ran a lot through Neymar (obviously) and a lot with Alves making runs. I’m optimistic about what’s ahead

I love how he will be mainly just a coach.
Let the board do the transfer dealings... They have done well lately with Auba, Mkhi, etc.

Well I’ve had 24 hours to digest the news, and if reports are accurate that Emery wants to build around Rambo and Auba I’m on board.
He’s also apparently very detail oriented which is something we’ve not been under Wenger recently.

As you said GH, if he is just a coach and let’s the board deal with transfers I’ll be optimistic about this. 2 year + option is the right move.

What do y’all think are our goals for this season? Top 4? Win Europa or FA Cup?

So with Cech changing his number to 1 does that mean he’s coming back? Really need an upgrade there

Maybe we can finally get draxler here? Id take the back gk from PSG too. Giving chech the #1, but need someone sooner than later to learn and take over.

I'm warming to Emery the more I read about him. PSG was obviously a unique scenario given their financial power and the egos they had/have in the team. He did fail there by PSG's standard but arguably overachieved everywhere else but Spartak.

If nothing else, I would expect the formation and structure of the team to improve overnight. I see a lot of 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 tactical things written which I think suits the current group of players well enough, assuming we upgrade at CB and CDM.

Found this article LINK on Emery's preferred tactics. Usually sets up in a 4-2-3-1 that can change into a 3-4-3.
