I think he does some pretty clever things to keep possession too. Stuff that can easily go unnoticed.
He's also extremely important when it comes to letting our FB's, especially Fabian, get forward.

Here's his role.
That angle doesn't show Meireles pulling on one of the dreadlocks. He deserved at least an elbow for that.

yeah, but I still find it hilarious that Port's tough guy was crying like a baby back bitch after that.

Yeah I agree with that.
When i describe how Beckerman plays I call him a "garbage man". Hes a solid defender and has no problem doing the "dirty work". I actually think hes been 1 of our best players in the World Cup so far and has been a key player considering the formation we run.

I did dig that Portuguese dudes Mohawk/beard combo though

While Beckerman has been outstanding in his role at the World Cup. I think his presence actually bottles up our attack somewhat. He's never been a player to real open up a defense with a killer pass.
He's wonderful in keeping possession and tackling, but can't open up a defense with an incisive pass.
It kills our chance to counter quickly with Bradley and our wide midfielders.

I completely agree with that. But, I also think that is a huge reason why we have him out there. We are more than willing to sacrifice a little bit of attack for the defense Beckerman brings us. For the most part, our D has been surprisingly good this WC (I know 2 mistakes last night, but still surprisingly good). And I think thats mostly because of Beckerman. Jermaine Jones, Beasley, and Fab (especially Fab) like to get up and run and be big players for us on the offensive end. Beckerman is the guy that typically covers for them. IMO, Fabian has been our best offensive threat besides Dempsey. He has been wrecking havoc this WC. And the reason he is able to be such a threat on offense is because of Beckerman.
And our offensive attack hasnt been bad at all. We struggled vs Ghana but we took advantage of the opportunities that we had vs them. And we were flat out good vs Portugal on the offensive end. I mean we have scored 2 goals in both of our matches so far. I just think our back line would be exposed without Beckerman there and we are more than willing to sacrifice a little bit on the offensive end to help us on the defensive side.
Put it this way: Beckerman isnt an offensive weapon for us, we dont ask him to be, and he knows that and does what we need him to do. Take Beckerman off and put a more offensive minded player in his role, and our defense would be considerably worse. And I dont think we have a guy that would be a much better offense threat at that spot than Beckerman. Mix is much more of a CAM, Green is a winger, etc.
The only guy that I would rather have in Beckermans spot would be Bradley, but we cant afford to drop him back to that role because hes the only guy that we really trust at that CAM spot and can do it for the full 90minutes, and hes struggled so far. And he brings a defensive mindset to that spot.
If we needed a more offensive attack, I wouldnt mind subbing Beckerman at the half or at the 60minute mark for Mix, drop Bradley to Beckermans spot, which is his natural position, and go from there.

I think a lot/ most of the people criticizing don't realize that he is playing a lot higher than normal. I don't know if it's mental or we just overestimated his attacking, but something has changed these last two games he has been playing higher than normal.

I don't care what anyone says.... my opinion is that those dreads and all dreads are nasty as frick.
Wash your fricking hair, boy.
Other than that ... good job of taking out that Chris "Birdman" Anderson wanna-be on Portugal.

I forgot who first said it on SB, but I have been doing my part in spreading the word of calling Jones and Beckerman the Dreaded Duo.

Jones/Beckerman have been great. Jones has been our best player probably. Beckerman has more skill than people give him credit for. His ability to pick out a pass is underrated too. I love the guy.

Beckerman is fairly useless when we are playing teams that are worse than us. For example if we played Iran or South Korea I would never play him.

I get the feeling that Beckerman would get a big kick out of being called "the 32 year old dude with dreads".
I've actually been a fan of his for a while and have always wanted him on the team. He will never be that flashy player and many times will blend into a match. But, he won't make crucial mistakes that kill you. He will be very solid and play very tough, which I why I like him. He won't be the guy who kills you, but he will do a good enough job to help you win.
