The US making it an extra round doesn't move the needle that much. Where I live in the US, you wouldn't even know the US is playing in the World Cup or that the tournament is mostly taking place on US soil.

The US broadcast rights for the world cup were close to $1 billion with Spanish/English rights combined. (Telemundo/Fox)
Thats more than double the next closest.
