For some reason, I only have bad memories of these guys
Pope was a beast in the center that had few bad moments. Big, but never imposing.... always controlled. He was a 1998-2006ish Bocanegra.
Agoos became a terrible defender as he aged, but was the best free kick taker not named Eddie Lewis that the US had ever had.

The problem is I'm a little to young to remember their better moments.
My two most clear memories of Agoos are the own goal against Portugal and the foul for the penalty against Korea.

That's why I said pre-2002 Agoos.
He didn't decline, he went off a cliff.

What were Pope's bad moments? I only remember him being a rare bright spot in 1998 (along with Frankie Hedjuk) and being a real rock for us in 2002.
Maybe the best American central defender of all time. I suppose Onyewu, who has had his own massive drop in play, could compete with Pope.

I'll admit I'm not being fair to Pope. I was 7 during the 1998 World Cup, and all I really remember before 2002 are goals and red cards.
I certainly wasn't in much of a position to analyze the quality of defenders.
