Villarreal brought him back for depth and leadership/mentoring.

Given his injury history and advanced age, they've got to be over the moon with this unexpected output.

No, his home (along with Juan Mata and Michu) is Real Oviedo.

I'm happy that he played. The infection in his foot cost Arsenal big time. I'm glad that he can keep playing.

I've yet to see a player more ambidextrous. It's insane that he isn't rated higher. His transition from wide player to no.10 to deep-lying playmaker was one of the more impressive transitions that I can remember. Just a fantastic player.

This is why RM whiffed on him in his prime. They wanted pretty boys. There was no other reason, other than merchandising.

Jorge Valdano was livid.

It's unfortunate that he didn't go to Madrid, as his reputation would have been better around the world. His talent was worthy of a top 10 player in the world, but he never got that sort of recognition, in my view. In England he was overshadowed by David Silva, Juan Mata, and Fabregas, and frankly, I think he was technically above all those players. He was far more versatile as well, with the ability to play wide, in the hole, and at DLP. All three of the aforementioned will have better stats, were on better teams, and thus will have the plaudits, but I can't overstate the degree to which Santi drove Arsenal to a top four finish in years we didn't have a very good team. He provided balance to the team to such a degree that we've struggled since to find that balance again. I'd even argue that if Santi didn't get injured, Wenger doesn't lose his job. His influence in central midfield was that great.

Agreed. There was controversy a plenty, every single time La Roja played.

For and against. The against basically radicated in him not belonging to a major club.

Technical people loved him, both for quality and mindset.
