Clubs in League One and League Two have voted in favour of introducing a salary cap, taking effect immediately.

Limits have been set at £2.5m and £1.5m for the respective divisions.

Wages, bonuses and other fees relating to players aged 21 or over will be included within the cap, but income gained from promotion or progression in cups will be exempt.

Clubs will be fined or face further sanctions if they exceed the spending limits.

Dang that's lower than MLS, and MLS has tons of exceptions. Seems like that will really put any team who gets promoted to the Championship at a huge disadvantage.

Real talk though that's an insanely low salary cap.

Article from April:

In League One, where 15 of the 24 clubs responded, the average highest earner is on 247,188 pounds a year and in League Two, where 14 responded, it is 114,020 pounds.

Well just further the distance between success in the EPL and aChampionship levels from League One and League Two. Good luck to those who are in the Championship and face relegation into the salary capped league.

Fans of those lower tiered leagues have to be furious at this, right? At least those who have aspirations to move up

I mean let’s take a look at the context of the global fricking pandemic lol

Money filters down from the higher divisions and clubs are now on the brink of going under

Weren't several clubs on the brink of going under before the pandemic? I feel like this would have happened eventually, and the pandemic made it happen sooner.

With as often as we hear of clubs going months without paying their players/staff, other leagues should consider similar methods.

There has always been a club or two down in league two that’s on the brink of going bust
