Wayne Rooney will win his 120th England cap later this month after Gareth Southgate sanctioned a farewell appearance for the DC United forward against the United States at Wembley on Nov. 15, the English Football Association (FA) has announced.
The former Manchester United and Everton captain -- England's all-time leading scorer with 53 goals -- has not represented his country since lining up against Scotland at Wembley in November 2016.

Understand that there is money going to charity as a result of it
But
This isn’t a testimonial, time for national teams is crucial and we are wasting game time just to say goodbye to a player who hasn’t been relevant for the team for basically a full cycle.
It cheapens a national team cap, just like at the end of Beckhams career when he was getting caps as a sub he had no right to be getting. Players like Robson and Shearer never got farewell games and you could argue were more iconic or did more for the country in tournaments, and I certainly haven’t forgotten his actions at the end of 2010 WC. He’s a plastic hero.
We have players like Callum Wilson who deserve call ups and won’t get one because of this crap.
Like I said, happy I’m not going to this game, will prefer the Croatia one by a country mile.

I sense some hatred of Man U in you that's clouding your judgment. Dude is England's ALL TIME leading scorer, he doesn't deserve a send-off?

I was pumped to read this. I have tickets in the AO section for this match and this just made it even better.

Nothing at all about Man Utd players, but England wasted years because managers were afraid to drop the big names, Gerrard was kept for a tournament for too long aswell.
Like I said it cheapens the national cap. Same as when Sven had 4 different captains in one game.

Chill out, dude. It’s a friendly a few months after the World Cup. The new “cycle” hasn’t really kicked off yet. It’s not like it’s a qualifying match for the Euros or a pre-World Cup warmup.
It’s one guy. Also, there are probably expanded rosters and expanded substitutions.

It’s a friendly dude. Chill the hell out. It’s the perfect time to do something like this.

I'm still pissed that Brian McBride didn't get a token twenty minutes at the friendly in Chicago right after his international retirement. Aside from Landon (which was a stage 9 clusterfrick because of Jurgen), USSF has done a terrible job with this.
