SI Article

November episode of REALSports had a segment on American Tom Byer, who lives and coaches in Japan. I like his approach to the long-term change in US Soccer:

quote:

Byer is devising a strategy called Soccer Starts at Home to establish his philosophy of focusing on the parents of soccer-playing kids between the ages of 2 and 6.

The program focuses on preschool children developing the love of keeping the ball close and gaining confidence with ball skills through meetings, clinics and educational sessions with parents.

His approach is what my novice eyes have noticed is the glaring deficiency of US players: Ball skills. By that I mean keeping the ball at your feet, moving through defenses with the ball in tight quarters.

Apparently he has done wonders in Japan. He advocates putting soccer balls in the crib with babies. Making sure they have a ball to kick around at all times from the time they can walk, which is what happens in most of the rest of the world...including shite hole countries like Trinidad, Costa Rica, Haiti, and El Salvador, who routinely feast on US deficiencies.

I'm not implying that he will be US Soccer's "Messiah", but if anything, it's a good look at soccer from another perspectiv.e

Easily one of the toughest things to do in the game.
Try to run full sprint while dribbling the ball and taking a touch with every single stride. It's near impossible.

I actually really like this approach. Hell, I still leave a ball around my apartment at all times just so I can dribble around furniture when i'm bored.

Take my up vote, sir

Having the ball glued to your foot from a young age does seem to make a world of difference. I teach English at a primary school in a soccer nation, so I see a lot of soccer played at recess, and holy shite some of these kids have more skill on the ball than my friends who played high school soccer.

The story of the US soccer federation is such an interesting one. It’s unlike anywhere else because of the fact that the most important country in the world, that so obviously has the best sporting culture in the world, is so mediocre when it comes to the most popular sport in the world. It’s weird how it worked out that way.

Speaking on the dude coming to work for the US Federation, I hope it works out. But I don’t really think it’s as much a coaching thing for our country as it is a culture thing. A change in our countrys culture would make all the other problems we have holding us back correct themselves. Easier said than done, obviously. But I think it’s pretty obviously happening.

Just as every other non sporting lesson a young person learns growing up, those things are mostly learned at home from those close to you. And they are as important as anything you learn from official training or game. The little things you learn and remember forever from uncles, school friends or whomever. It’s what happens when the sport is embedded deep in the culture. Sports like baseball, football, and basketball have succeeded in doing that here in America. Some are becoming more popular and some have become less popular through the years.

Soccer seems like it’s beginning to really take hold of our culture enough to do this. A sport in America has never grown at the rate soccer has. The non-qualification sucked bad, but it can be corrected and made right. I have pretty high hopes for our short and long term future as a soccer country.

So bumping this because USSF cut funding for this six months in because “the results were insufficient to assess if the program would be scalable across the US”.

So a program designed to take a generation or two to take effect was funded and then abandoned after six months. fricking brilliance once again

Yeah Sunil was a big fan but the coaches association and US Soccer CEO were not in favor of it. It’s absurd.
