It works for some but doesn't work for all. In the end I'm convinced that some players have to find a situation that fits their personal needs and therefore allows them to thrive in the right environment. This was the case for Donovan, that back home was better. It may be the case for Morris initially, although I'm sure he makes a permanent move at some point. There is no guarantee that Europe = success. He succeeded with the national team and did more to grow soccer in the US than anyone before him. While I think toughing it out in Europe, if he had been capable of doing so, would have resulted in possibly a better Landon Donovan, I'm not entirely convinced because I believe MLS and the US was the right fit for Donovan, and it was that fit that allowed him to thrive as a player whereas he may not have found the same success in Europe, given his personality.

Sad but true. Landon certainly didn't help the cause in terms of the way soccer players and fans were/are treated by players and fans of traditional American sports. His talent and accomplishments maybe aren't as appreciated as they should be just because of the kind of weird, awesome way he went about things. His voice and the way he spoke mixed with his sometimes strange and borderline feminine mannerisms basically turned him into the poster child for "soccer figs" everywhere. From the outside looking in, he came off as a little bitch soccer player, which only reiterated to my dumbass friends and I what soccer players are like.

I can only speak for myself and where I came up (a large public school in the South), but soccer players were basically just the white kids that weren't good enough at football or baseball, mixed with a few stoners, and then the occasional crossover kid that played the mainstream sports and soccer (usually our kicker on the football team). It seems like things have changed pretty drastically in a relatively short amount of time though, in terms of the way soccer players are viewed in America, and more specifically in the South.
