SI.com: You've set a public goal for MLS to be one of the world's top soccer leagues by 2022. What are the biggest ways in which the league has advanced toward that goal in the past year?
Garber: When we were bidding for the World Cup, we went to the MLS board and asked them to financially support the bid, and laid out a plan by which we thought if we could win the World Cup bid, here are the ways MLS could benefit by it. At that point we established a goal to say we ought to be able to be one of the top leagues in the world if we have the World Cup. Then we lost it and went back home and licked our wounds a bit. But rather than crawl under a rock, we said let's be men about this and have the same goal, and then we doubled down strategically to say let's do everything we can to put a plan in place to be able to stand toe-to-toe with the rest of the leagues.

All the MLS haters can kiss my arse. All they do is complain about the play and how it's not good, blah blah.
Guess how the MLS gets better and grows?
KEEPING our players. BRINGING the top players from the world. Players WANTING to be here.
How about y'all support your home county league and stop with all the gloom and doom you bunch of commie bastards

Not a dream, but our vision...To be one of the top Leagues in the world by 2022

I take it you haven't been following MLS at all.
Al Don Garber talks about is to make MLS one of the top leagues in the world by 2022.
Although this goal is a bit premature imo, the first step is to keep our best players home and pay them what they are worth.
This would have the added benefit of making a professional soccer career a viable option for our better atheletes when they see people like Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley making 5 million a year and more.

Also, I'm surprised New York isn't trying to get MB. He started his professional career with MetroStars... they have an open DP spot and he is a type of player they could use. And with NYCFC coming in 2015, they will need to do something to draw more fans, in my opinion.

There is no way they can reach that because of 3 reasons.
1) It will never be the biggest sport in it's own country.
2) They aren't a part of UEFA
3) The teams are all owned by the league itself.
Now, that is not to say that it can't continue to improve it's footprint in America because they are doing a very good job of that. But in terms of quality, they can max out to be on par with the South American leagues and the non big-4 UEFA leagues (EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A).

MLS is apart from UEFA, yes.

Players NOW.
10 years ago (hell maybe 5). If I would have told you 2 of the top, let's say 3, top American players. Left Europe to play in MLS in their prime. You would have never believed me.
MLS has money. They are growing. They are growing fast. And the young generation is growing up loving soccer, instead of football and baseball solely.

So that level is not goood enough for your?
By the way, I disagree with you in that we will max out at a higher level than this.
The USA is not a country but a continent. We have 310 million people who live here. For comparision, England has 53 million. Portugal 10 million! Holland 16 million!!
Yet, even with cricket, and rugby, track and field, etc, to compete with the EPL is number one in the world.
We don't have to be the number one sport in the country to have a sweet league.
To say that we need to part of UEFA to be the best is eurosnoberry at its finest.

Do you really think Bradley coming back to the MLS makes a difference for the future?
Do Dempsey and Bradley make the move if they are playing regularly for Tottenham and Roma?
Both answers are a resounding no.

I'm probably more American than you, but I recognize the truth of the circumstances.

Are you saying Bradley or Dempsey would have no high level European offers?
Because I am 100% positive they do. And they chose MLS.
Them choosing MLS makes it easier for other guys to choose MLS. Which improves the product. Which makes MLS better
You're an American eurosnob. Congrats

No probably not, but they chose to come back here instead of moving to a different European side, which says a lot about MLS as well.

Actually yes

I don't mind Bradley going to Toronto but I do wished he could've played somewhere in Europe for the rest of the season and then maybe move to Toronto after the cup. MLS is about to go into tv contract negotiations so getting him now likely plays a part. People on social media will say he is dumb to come back to MLS and they are the same people that complain about the MLS lacking quality. Well one thing has to change before the other.

the answer to question number one is a resounding yes. It makes the dream of making money playing soccer in the US a viable option for a young player:
For question number two, they problably would not leave if they were getting regualar playing time but they better be getting paid a LOT MORE than what Bradley is making with Roma now.
Which part of 800k euros at Roma versus a likely 5-7 million dollar a year in MLS salary do you NOT understand?
