On another note, where does CD9 fit into the equation?
Why don't you let homeboy get more than (2) 45 minute halves of competitive soccer in an 18 month stretch before we worry about the national team.

How interesting would a 4-3-1-2 formation be
Chandler - Ream - Boca - Lichaj
Dempsey - Bradley - Donovan
Holden (I wonder how Davies would do at a CAM role)
Agudelo - Altidore.

Two of them were Pk's he didn't earn.
Cool your jets, bud.
That said, I wanna see CD9 coming in as an 80th minute sub come gold cup.

This will probably get dismissed by most here, but does anybody think playing Dempsey up top as an actual forward could work out well?

Yes.

Davies' touch isn't good enough to play CAM. He'd have to be forward or on the wing in a 4-3-3.

I think so, too. Everything I've seen from Dempsey makes me think he's better at finishing from short range than firing shots from distance.

Sarcasm.

Plus Clint isn't getting any younger.

Clint scores most of his goals for Fulham when he's up top, but Fulham also play a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 similar to the US that he does well on the left side of as well.
He doesn't like to get wide, so when he plays in the U.S. 4-4-2, he needs to be on the same side as a wing who really gives us width if we're going to be effective. I don't think we have anyone like that. Donovan likes to get inside, and the rest of our wing options are limited.

Timmy Chandler could work well with him with his speed.

Definitely, but then Dempsey would be on the right, and he likes coming in from left to right.
I think Agudelo will be ready for 2014, and I think Jozy will be markedly better. Target forwards don't really blossom until at the earliest 26 (generally). Jozy will only be 24 at the 2014 Cup...meaning I don't think we'll need Dempsey up top.

A couple of days ago I argued that Dempsey should be starting up top with Juan. He's certainly better at Jozy's job than Jozy is.
Problem is filling the hole that Dempsey leaves. When Stu Holden is healthy, it's no problem. When he isn't, we've got a bunch of question marks.

That's a good argument, but the second part is also the correct counter argument.
I don't see why Wondo doesn't get a call up again in a shot to play his natural position. He got stuck by himself up top against Chile — not his position. He's a paired striker in a 4-4-2 and is really play an attacking midfield role for San Jose right now. He's best when he's coming from the right though (which is what Jozy generally does)

He keeps scoring, and he will.

His first goal Saturday literally gave me wood. I cried after.

It was gorgeous. I hit one like that from further out playing around today. I was pretty stoked. Anytime you can catch a good volley on the turn it's a beautiful thing.

Wondolowski is carrying my fantasy team to the title this year.
