"My memories are of Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, and not forgetting Banks -- Gordon was a proper great," Pele said. "And that was just in England. All around the world it was the same: brilliant Germans, Dutchmen and of course Brazilians."

But Pele believes that today's era cannot match that depth of world-class talent.

"Today you have just three great players in the world, [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo and maybe Neymar ... maybe," he said. "But in that time there were so many."

"I think one of the problems is that the players used to remain longer in the team they started with, in the country they were born," he said. "Before, the players belonged to their club, they had the chance to grow there. Now the players belong to the impresarios, the agents, their personal managers.

"We have this problem in Brazil. The best players start to play, then immediately comes the impresario, they pay a little too much, and hoping to make money straight away, they push them too early. They don't have time to develop."

What a bummer. He's become such a hater. Anytime he opens his mouth, it just reeks of jealousy and bitterness. You would think a guy like him, who's universally recognized as one of the best 3 or 4 players ever, would be more content with his career and life accomplishments. Anyone with a working brain will tell you that this generation has more great players than any other. The same goes for the next generation of players and the one after that. That's just how it works.

ETA Just my opinion here, but Messi in his prime >>> Pele in his prime. Granted, It's near impossible to have a rational discussion comparing Pele to the great players of today because things have changed so much.

Sounds like Scottie Pippen and the 73 Dolphins.

Pirlo, Zlatan, Suarez, Gerrard, Silva, Neur, Totti..just to name a handful. Pele is high. I'd love to hear his definition of all-time great

He also said Nicky Butt was the only player he would pay to watch at WC 2002

He's cooled off the Neymar bandwagon if he's saying "maybe" to him. He said he was the best in the world or something like that before he even went to Barca.

Suarez, Zlatan, Iniesta are all time greats unless all time great only includes ballon d'or winners

Pele was a great player but great players are often stupid.

He's not that wrong in his assessment of today, but he's wrong in thinking that back then there were seemingly multiple "all-time greats" in every soccer playing nation.

The reason they are "all time greats" is because there can only ever be a few playing at a time that rise that much over their peers.

It is interesting he mentions three rather glamorous players. I mean, for the last decade, we've had the return of the DLP, the height of possession football, and then the perfection of the possession/counter-attack system with Bayern in 2012. The standard of technique now is a lot higher. We have ball-playing CB's who could play way further forward.

I don't think we'll ever get as fantastic DLP's playing at the same time like we did with Pirlo and Xavi.

Pele doesn't realize how much the tactics have changed, and therefore how we define greatness has changed as well. While Messi and Ronaldo are two of the all time greats mostly because of their insane productivity, we have many more ways of looking at other great players.

Those two guys are so far above and beyond everyone else over the last nearly a decade now though it's crazy.

Who else is going to be really globally revered 30 years from now?

There are plenty of guys who will be legends for their club or country but I don't think anyone else besides those two has etched their name in the all time great stone.

Iniesta is close. Pirlo maybe.

Neymar could get there if he can produce at his current level for another 7-8 years and be the leading man once Messi is past it. He would really boost his stock if he could lead Brazil to a WC.

I can't think of anyone else really close to making that leap.

Describes Totti perfectly. He's a god in Rome.

But all time....not even close.
