Ozzie Alonso and Kyle Beckerman

Combined to complete 58 of 61 passes last night.
Alonso was 37 of 40. Beckerman completed all 21 of his passes, including the game winning assist to GAM.
The MLS'ers tied Chelsea at 88% passing and maintained 47.6% of possession.
According to the MiCoach, Steven Beitashour led the team in distance traveled (3.6 miles) and Chris Pontius led the team in top speed (20mph)

Haha. Di Matteo singled out Alonso for praise in his presser. Alonso really is EPL quality. Doubt he belongs at a top club like Chelsea, but we've seen former MLS'ers do pretty well at the the lower and mid level clubs. (Clint Dempsey, Stuart Holden, Tim Ream, Tim Howard, ect.)

Alonso, as of just a couple weeks ago, is an American citizen, if we can get Cuba to revoke his citizenship he would be eligble for the USMNT.
He's already publicly said that he'd like to play for the USA.

The issue is that he left cuba. If Cuba had kicked him out he would be a lock.

Is there any kind of appeal he can make to FIFA saying the he was seeking political asylum or something of that nature as to why he defected? Is there a precedent for this? Clearly Cuba is not going to do him any favors

We could possibly win an appeal on it, I wouldn't be surprised if Jurgen tried. Would be an excellent addition to our player pool.

This. He sought asylum in the US, so I've heard that in such cases FIFA is a little more lenient.

Ten years ago there were 10 teams in the league. Now there are 19. That's opened up opportunities for a lot of guys who otherwise would have completely given up on soccer. How many guys are there that didn't get the opportunity and quit for every Jay Demerit?
The USMNT shouldn't have more than 1 or 2 regular starters from MLS for the next 15-20 years, but... history has shown that the majority of those players are going to start their career here.
Dempsey, Bradley, Holden, Howard, Altidore, McBride, Bocanegra, ect.
The fact that guys like Ream and Cameron are getting work permits on appeal to be transferred to the EPL without playing anywhere near the necessary 75% of national team games is a real testament to how far the pool has come, and how for it's going. You sprinkle in our Afro-American Germans, the gringos in Mexico, and our kids in scandanavia, and we're in damn good shape.
