Well I really hope we see some shakeup on Wednesday. Random thoughts/ideas:
I think we need to start with shoring up our defense and getting back to pressing. I say Lucas on for Gerrard and possibly even playing a double pivot with him and Can. Allen wasn't bad today, but I would go with the bigger, more physical pair in front of the back 4.
Ahead of them, I wouldn't mind seeing Henderson (if he's healthy) in his old AM role he played early last season and two years ago. No, he's not the most creative player, but he moves without the ball into space, and he would help with the pressing and give us an engine we sorely need in the middle of the field.
Kolo should play. If Sakho's healthy, he should partner. Otherwise it's kind of a tossup who the second CB should be. I'd be ok with Lovren playing with Kolo because they would be more comfortable playing a high line and hopefully Lovren would play better with true DM coverage, but Skrtel and Kolo looked good together against Madrid. Moreno and Manquillo at fullbacks but they have to be smarter pushing forward and tighter in possession.
Front 3, I'd go with Coutinho and Lallana right behind the striker just because they're some of our more creative attackers that are willing to move without the ball and would help connect the midfield with attack.
At striker, does it really matter? But seriously, Sterling looked good with the others in a smaller, interchanging front 3, but he's played so damn much and been a little underwhelming that I would probably sit him, partly as an ego check too. I'd also almost want to reward Lambert with that goal from today, but he can't play as a lone striker with this lineup, so I go with Borini. He'll work hard on defense, provide more on the counter, and he knows how to move without the ball while not running in cement shoes (sorry Rickie) and I assume Balotelli won't be fit. I know we all want to see 2 strikers, but I figure this is at least a little realistic since Brendan won't do it while also putting out a group that should be able to press and defend better front to back.
Just wanted to at least provide a little discussion because there's not much else that can be done or said right now other than what we're doing has been a massive failure. Anybody else got any ideas?
I need to get some more/new whiskey/scotch

There are a few parallels in the two teams... specifically, the underachieving and both managers refusal to address defensive needs, despite having the funds to do so this summer..
I realize AW is at a different place in his career than BR... I'm not trying to put him on Arsene's level... just over the past 12 months or so..

Sterling needs to sit, he's done absolutely nothing for a few months now.
Lallana needs to play centrally.
Coutinho may need to sit. His passes haven't been able to unlock even an open gate yet this year.
Gerrard needs to sit.
Lambert needs to play for Swag.
Completely shake up the back four - Toure had a pretty good performance and doesnt see the pitch since? Meanwhile Skrytel is clueless?
All January money to a DM. Could have had Alex Song or anyone in the fall, but decided that we didn't need anyone there.
3 goals to a bad Palace team. Thats horrid.
BR has about month, but only if he gets a result in the next two weeks. Coaches find ways even with their best players out.

I think its worth trying, if only because what we have been trying clearly isn't working. It'll probably be Lucas and Gerrard though, which every single person with at least one eye can tell doesn't work.
Gerrard is not close to the same player as last year, and coming off a WC year, he needs a good bit of rest that he's not getting.

I think this is key. He looked like he was wearing concrete shoes yesterday. Slow, clunky, and almost hesitant. I will say htough, he still makes very crisp passes most of the time. Maybe that is what BR is valuing against the other possible CDMs...
There are several things that he could try, all of them including numbers up front rather than relying on a Suarez-esque performance from a player clearly not on his level.
I almost think if Coutinho, Balo when healthy, and Lambert played up there, with Cou as a CAM, there could be some offensive fireworks. Balo is good at finding unique ways to the goal, Lambert is just a HUGE guy that MAKES his way to the goal, and Cou is fairly creative and very quick.
As far as the back four though, I am flabbergasted. It seems like Kolo/Skrtel has been our best CB combo as another poster said earlier, but...

Sucks feeling excited about today, then having to consciously temper my expectations and bring myself back to the real world

Yeah, I'm over it. Whatever happens today, I'm already just over it.

Definitely an interesting game. This is our chance to spring ourselves back into CL contention and build some confidence within the squad, but if we get a poor result, the frustration will multiply

So so happy to see Kolo start. I like the lineup, only changes I would make are Lallana for Allen and borini for sterling.

Gerrard and Lucas together?
Only hope is that Stevie is playing higher up.
Is Moreno fit? He sits again?

Yeah, Mignolet should have caught that. Kolo hung him out to dry hardcore.
Lamberrrrrrrt!!!!! How did that even happen!?

Lmfao. What a goofy goal lambert. We got lucky, atrocious defending.

At least he has sticktoitiveness.
That effort pays off.
ETA: 2 goals in two leads striker roles. I don't want to get excited too fast, but maybe we have stumbled onto an energy source if he can keep it going strong.

I agree wholeheartedly. Just funny how it happened. I love to see him rewarded for it.

So apparently Kolo thinks that our back line is too reactionary and needs to stay pushed up... Not sure if that is the real issue or if Skrtel has issues with awareness overall. Seems like he gets turned around really easy. That side between him and Manquillo is porous as all hell CONSTANTLY.

I really hope when Sakho is back he is inserted on the left, allowing kolo to slide over to the right (I believe that is his favored side )
