News about the Reigning European and World Champions; Striker Issues

The latest Spanish polls show that even the Torres-tards have surrendered to overwhelming evidence.
You will recall that Llorente had caught up to Torres in voting as the preferred striker (and many thousands above Fabregas as well, muchas gracias). Now (as of yesterday), Llorente is far and away the preferred choice.
This is telling, as the propensity to vote for Torres was tremendous (there are/were alot of reasons, suffice it to see it was a watery concoction of EPL ignorance/indifference, desire to see Torres do well, the AtlMad factor, the Madrid/capital factor, and general football ignorance).
Torres has gradually but solidly faded into anonymity.
ETA One would think that many votes come from the knowledge of Llorente's lack of match fit form at the beginning of the tournament, and a logical assumption that much time has transpired (and therefore, he has had time to recoup), but, there are still absolutely no reports about him or his fitness. Really, really weird.

Honestly, the whole Torres saga has baffled me the last year or so.
He looks like he's fit, he had that big moment in the CL against Barca, yet he's regarded as the bastard child of his team (Chelsea and Spain).

I still laugh at Torres, I don't think I could ever care for him since his departure from liverpool and what he said.

I want Torres to do well because I like him, BUT if I were a Spanish fan, I would not want him starting right now. Partly because of his complete lack of confidence and partly because Llorente is a beast and I would love to see what he can do on the big stage.

There is also the 'remember what happened the last time Spain met Portugal' vote (Llorente's play revolutioned the dynamics of a hard fought match when Spain defeated the bunkering Portugal in the WC round of sixteen).

It kills me how incredibly soft his touch is for such a big guy. I'm able to appreciate it better than most since I was a 6'4 soccer player trying to emulate Zlatan and other big strikers...to no avail.

We have been waiting years now for the old Torres to return, but I think it's obvious that he is too psychologically damaged. It's not his fitness that I question, but his killer instinct. He's lost that. While his movement in the final 1/3 have been textbook, it's his first touch and striking ability that have been poor.
He can be serviceable at club level still, but I don't think he will be an effective striker for Spain ever again.

at the absolute/senior level, he never was.
His goal to cap ratio is horrendous, and I have three too many fingers on one hand when it comes to recalling any goal of importance by him.
I don't hate him, I was very happy to see him kick arse in Liverpool, but he's never seized the moment with La Roja.

True, but he was well on his way. He was the leading scorer for Spain in the 2006 WC qualifying, and the 2006 WC (tied with Villa). Then it was downhill from there...

You mean that he wanted to join a big club and compete in Europe? Well in his first full season with the club he was part of the European Champions. Guess he got what he wanted, can you blame him?

I'm interested as to why we haven't seen Llorente this tournament as well, especially considering he plays in a side like Bilbao that is high tempo and might link well with the current Spanish midfield. I think one of the biggest issues, outside of form, is the issue of service. Llorente's introduction might also require the presence of a player like Navas, who could provide service into Llorente. This might compromise the double pivot system that del Bosque seems deadset on using. Whether the double pivot is the best system to use is another question though.
