I don't follow soccer for shite obviously, but what happened to him? Googled a few articles but nothing really explained why he didn't pan out. Just wasn't that great? Lazy?

He's still stuck in 2011 making sweet passes in the Gold Cup.

Went pro too early, went to Europe too early, and stopped growing too early.

He went to lots of great teams early on and didn't meet their standards.

He kept going out on loans, which is often a death spell for young talent.

Basically he is undersized and not great at anything besides one on one dribbling and doesn't like to help out in defense.

All that being said, he is still good enough to play in a top 15-20 professional league and be on our B team assuming he hasn't changed too much in the past year.

He normally plays well with the national teams.

By normally, you mean one game in 2011 against Panama, where he had one good pass?

Maybe he was decent for some youth national teams, but that's really reaching.

Probably should make "passes" singular.

I said teams which implied youth teams also. He was also good for the Mexico match in that gold cup. He has had other good performances playing for the U.S also.

This. This. This.

To answer the OP, he never advanced his physical or skill game past age 17. There are various reasons why he never progressed, but I think he could get back on track in the right club situation.
