Yea, Walcott on the plane and they advance. I've been a Welbeck hater for a while, and he has impressed me recently, but he's still a sub at this point.

he's got to drop welbeck against costa rica IMO. i'd drop one of gerrard or hendo for jack too, but as beast pointed out, their troubles are mainly based on tactics so who knows if jack would do any better.

have a feeling the ox could start if he's fit. their only chance of advancing is italy winning their next two and England scoring a shite ton of goals.

I don't get it in the EPL he's awful but on the bigger stage he shows up like UCL and WC.

Why not pair Gerrard, Henderson and Wilshere? That would be really close to mirroring the LFC midfielf from this season where Gerrard excelled. He can still control matches, but he needs to be surrounded by 2 MIDFIELD runners who are good tacklers and can relieve space in the middle of the park for him to pull strings.

We are clearly missing the obvious fact here:

Ricky Lambert played in a World Cup game.

i'm not opposed to that. i guess i was going with what roy is more likely to do.

i think that would be a much better lineup than what they've started with. would've been much better in these first two matches where they needed to be more defensive. now, they really have to go for it...with a crazy, attacking lineup like they've fielded in these first two matches.

They don't have many other options in the midfield. Unfortunately it seems Gerrard is undroppable at this point. Like I said in the first match thread, Roy should have brought Barry as I think he had a fantastic season and would offer a bit more tactical flexibility.

Yep.

I disagree OBU. They need a balanced midfield. They go out with whatever this formation is again and they will be exposed at least once by Costa Rica. Even with 4 attackers, they don't have the midfield numbers to hold the ball and build up some good chances.

Terry is what this team is really missing though

Terry/Cahill kept a clean sheet vs Suarez this year. could have been the difference.

Back to the point at hand... How awesome is Luis

A month after surgery, not playing for 5+ weeks... 2 chances, 2 goals... IMO, the best player in the world the past year...

Say what you want, but there's not another player in the world who would execute those two chances today as well as Suarez did.

1. I'm very interested to see with what the press go with. Flame Gerrard or the ref? There is no excuse fo Godin to be on the pitch, the whole "oh if hes not on a yellow he would get booked" doesnt fly, it shows the complete inepitude of the linesman, he is looking straight at it and theres no excuse for him not to tell the ref what happened. I cant htik of the last time a lino influenced an actual decision. And the 2nd goal is all on Gerrard, there is literally no excuse for what he does there, he stands under the ball, mis-judged at that, no run on the ball at all, at any level a player should not be flicking that on towards his own goal.

2. Happy for Rooneys goal, his header is v. unlucky hes just overrun it and had to stretch back for the header, no sutprising as I imagine he didnt expect the ball to come to him in the first place.

3. Welbeck should be dropped for Lallana, he doesnt run at the FB nearly enough, he has value as a squad player but Lallaa should start, much more direct and is better value to the tea.

4. The most frustrating thing for me today was sterling, every time Johnson had the ball on the line he was cutting back to level with him but inside, dont think he ran the line more than twice and everytime we did go at them down the line we got to the byline, but instead he cut in, slowed the play and moved himself into the defense instead of stretching them.

5. Sturridge was terrible, his play before the goal was uality but before that he lost the ball too much, and did more bad than good. I did think he and Rooney alternated well, just because he is the 1 doesnt mean he Rooney and in this case Welbeck cant switch. But he wasted the ball far too much especially in the 1st half.

6. I actually thought Gerrard had a good game/80 minutes, he switched the play and made Johnson and Baines move forward

7. This game makes me think Baines, Barkley etc. need to move teams. They were both totally out of their depth, and its inexperience that comes with no european/champions league experience. Barkley is growing as a player, but he shouldnt be off the bench before Lallana, everything he tried today was dealt with easily, and he tried to do too much, take on one player too many etc.

8. I've never celebrated more than Rooneys goal, I was on my feet standing on the chair in the pub leading the Rooney chants to about 200 people, my heart was still racing when they Suarez scored again.

9. I hope they dont sack Roy.
