quote:Like I was telling Beast yesterday I think Gerrard's time has passed him. Shelvey looked way more dangerous than Gerrard did. I know Gerrard is the Captain and the heart and soul of the team but he just isn't up to par any more. Plus with Sahin and Allen in the lineup Pool won't miss Gerrard's passing as much. Let Shelvey play. Every time I watch him he seems to be doing something positive offensively.
Gerrard was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Our offense is really supposed to flow through him so I give him a lot of the blame. Really wasteful.

Exactly what I expected him to say and I do believe him... On the job training, much different than MLB.
Anyway, I'm generally happy in the direction we're heading, sans a few hiccups. I think they have the right guy in Rodgers..

Beast I sent you an invite to the group. Please help me put some sense into these inbreds. They're now comparing FSG to G & H.

i do.... ya'll are very knowledgable as far as transfers and such.... this is the most concise, fastest route to get my info on what's going on with acquisitions and stuff.... i just don't post a lot....

popping up after a poor result
guess i'll be here alot, by your characterization.....
yeah, i'd love to sit here and be as optimistic about the future as you guys, but i can't... after seeing us royally frick up the transfer period ending, we don't have a squad that can compete with pretty much anyone right now, we don't have the biggest bankroll, which means we will consistently miss out on key big name players to other big spending clubs, and there's no certainty that this "vision for the future" is going to pay dividends anyway.... it's a huge gamble, this idea of sacrificing this season for next, or whatever..... in a perfect world, sure it's gonna work, but the reality is, we could be absolute shite right now, banking on the future success of our "strategical moves" in the window this season, hoping and praying they excel next season and we regain our form..... but, to play devil's advocate, what if it doesn't?
is everyone willing to accept that this wasn't the best idea if a couple of seasons from now we still aren't where we should be/ could have been? i'm willing to absolutely admit i was way, WAY off about the entire process if they do the unthinkable and regain form... but, again, from what i've seen THUS FAR from the entire franchise, top to bottom, i don't have much hope that they can or will...
then we will have wasted this season AND not be any closer to our overall goal of becoming a key club in the PL/Europe.... nothing to this point really tells me that they have us on track.... sure, you can look at the signings and with guarded optimism, say "well, this guy has done this and he's young, so eventually....", but it also could blow up in our face, this "waiting for tomorrow" approach.... the only thing we are guaranteed is today, and i'd rather them try to win now, than risking our future as well....

There really is no other way for us to go about it... There doesnt seem to be any more Russian/Middle Eastern Sugar Daddies out there... FSG (and most other business people) arent going to throw in their own cash and thankfully, wont leverage the club for a quick fix. The deadline day blunder aside, I think their holistic plan of buying young talent and developing it... living within your means... is the way to go... Giving Brendan Rogers time is the way to go... Remember, Man City were a minute away from winning absolutely nothing last year, given all the money they spent...
So far, they have made good business decisions to set us up financially in the future (we'll see on the stadium)...
Of course Rodgers and his brand of football is going to be a gamble, but any manager would be... Just enjoy the ride, cause in the end, at least for me, when Rodgers wins the title, it will be that much sweeter...

I'll assess the damage once I get home and see if I'm going to join in. I'm arguing with inbred Scousers in a handful of places at the moment

[TIMES - Who has the final say in Liverpool transfers?] - Tony Barrett....
John W. Henry, Liverpool’s principal owner, has attempted to quell anger over the club’s transfer strategy caused by the failure to sign Clint Dempsey by writing an open letter to the fans.
In the letter, which was published on the official Liverpool website yesterday, Henry expressed disappointment that Brendan Rodgers was not able to strengthen his attacking options on transfer deadline day, but insisted that he was not interested in “expensive, short-term fixes”.
The American businessman also detailed the need for Liverpool to recover from the damage done by “previous regimes” and emphasised that the transfer policy that is now in place is designed to provide value for money and to reduce the risk of damage being done to the club’s financial wellbeing.
But there were a number of issues surrounding the decision to allow Andy Carroll to join West Ham United on loan until the end of the season and subsequent failure to recruit Dempsey that Henry failed to address.
Here, The Times examines what the calamitous end to the transfer window tells us about the state of Liverpool and relationships within the club.
Why was Fenway Sports Group (FSG) not prepared to back the judgment of Rodgers on Dempsey?
In one sense, it was. Despite informing Rodgers that Dempsey, 29, was not a suitable target because of his age, it still sanctioned a swap deal that would have resulted in Jordan Henderson joining Fulham in exchange. The problem occurred when Henderson refused the move and the lengths to which FSG would back its manager’s judgment was then put to the test.
In Henry’s opinion, at a cost of about £6 million, Dempsey would have represented the kind of “expensive, short-term fix” that he no longer wants Liverpool to pursue. He did approve an offer of up to £4 million, but it was one that Fulham, who had been so angered by Liverpool’s public interest in the forward that they reported them to the FA for an alleged illegal approach, were never going to accept.
The proposed move was doomed to fail simply because the Liverpool owner did not agree with Rodgers’s valuation of a player that he had identified as a key target.
Who has the final say on transfers at Liverpool?
When Rodgers took the Liverpool manager’s job on the condition that he would not be subordinate to a director of football, it seemed that he had won a significant power battle that would give him the final say on transfers.
Appearances, though, can be deceptive and Liverpool have instead implemented a collegiate director of football model that spreads responsibility through a group of player recruitment specialists and football analysts who work with the manager in identifying targets. David Fallows and Barry Hunter, two senior scouts, have been recruited from Manchester City, although both are on gardening leave, while Michael Edwards, the club’s head of analytics, is becoming an increasingly influential figure at Anfield. The concept is that decisions over players will be made by the group as a whole, rather than by any individual, but the in-built checks and balances can slow transfers down, as was the case with the pursuit of Joe Allen, which was held up by an internal dispute over whether the midfielder was worth the £15 million valuation that Swansea City had placed upon him.
Is Ian Ayre’s position as managing director now under threat?
As the senior official handed the responsibility for negotiating the proposed transfer of Dempsey, it has been widely assumed that Ayre would carry the can for the collapse of the deal. The reality, though, was that the Liverpool-born executive had been handed an impossible task because he did not have the resources necessary to coax Fulham into doing business. All he could do was make an offer that was in keeping with the restrictions that were imposed on by him by his employers and then concede defeat when the bid was turned down.
Suggestions that Rodgers was furious with Ayre as a result are wide of the mark. The pair have a strong working relationship that has not been damaged by the Dempsey shambles. There are no indications that FSG is ready to axe the 49-year-old.
Where does this leave Rodgers’s relationship with FSG?
Strained, but not beyond repair. Rodgers feels that his judgment on Dempsey should have been backed and he is particularly disappointed that he has been left so short of attacking options. For its part, FSG is dissatisfied at what it feels was an attempt by the manager to force it into signing a player whom it had insisted did not fit in with transfer strategy. Henry’s letter was an attempt to put the situation behind them and move on.

Wow. On the day of, all the blame was on Ayre supposedly. This is an interesting turn of events.

Great article on the statistics of Joe Allen so far:
LINK
I know its still early, but think of all of the other youngsters we signed last year who haven't even come close to making an impact on a game to this day.
What a player. I think I found what name my next jersey is going to have on the back of it.

At present, Joe Allen is ranked:
6th in the Premier League for total number of passes (188)
3rd for attacking half passing accuracy (89.52%), and final third passing accuracy (85.71%)
3rd for minutes per interception (27)
3rd for number of times possession won (26)
2nd for minutes per possession won in midfield (19.29)
2nd for minutes per loss of possession (15)
2nd for passing accuracy (94.15%).

Rare foray into the LFC thread for me here. I will put aside my distaste for Suarez, and my generally negative views on Kenny Dalglish's recent managerial stint for now.
Gerrard is simply not a tiki-taka center mid. He's a direct, box-to-box midfielder at his best. In his prime, Gerrard could pick out a killer long pass or cross, or attempt a cannon shot better than almost in anyone in the game. However, these passes are of low completion percentage and require a player attempting several prior to creating a quality scoring opportunity.
With the advent of the modern possession game, players of Gerrard style often struggle to adapt to "boring" pass-backs or short triangle passing along with tactical discipline required of center mids.
I remember several instances last game where Gerrard wanted to play a long cutting pass to one of his forwards, yet hesitated and made a slow short pass. When he did make a long pass, it failed.
As great as Gerrard was in his prime, he's far from the ideal type of player Brendan Rodgers wants in his team, as frustrating as that may be for the loyal Liverpool faithful.
