Currently, I think only 4 US teams can qualify for CCL. It's possible that Canadian teams can take 2 of those 4 spots.

MLS and Liga MX are considering adding a new tournament that will only consist of teams from those 2 leagues. If that happens, I think it should only include teams that do not qualify for CCL.

I don't see what MLS can do about that. That's not a pro/rel issue.

It’s not but it’s part of the larger issue and that’s why I said it’s not MLS’s fault per se, though in the past they have been very insular in ignoring outside cup competitions rather that work to improve those competitions. Example: a few years ago there was an instance where MLS used their contract with ESPN to block US Open Cup streams on ESPN 3. Actively trying to hurt other competitions outside MLS hurts soccer as a whole in this country.

Again there are small signs they are moving to open up to the world and the region rather than just trying to act like other closed North American leagues who operate in a totally different kind of marketplace. Hopefully that continues.

I know we joke a lot about the LA Galaxy getting special treatment on here, but they certainly didn’t get that when it came to Gio dos Santos’ contract situation. Instead of letting the Galaxy keep a 4th DP like many expected, they were punished by MLS for their lack of roster compliance and forced to buy out his contract and get rid of him. Which is good. No team should get special treatment.

I really don’t think the LA Galaxy are as “special” to the league now as they were 5-10 years ago. They used to be the only big-market team that consistently spent huge money on players. That’s not the case now. We have a 2nd team in LA that spends big, and 2nd team in NYC that signs big names, a team in Atlanta that spends big. Seattle and Toronto also spend big. Miami is coming in next year, who will spend big, and supposedly Nashville will spend big, too. It’s a natural product of more billionaire owners coming into the league.

The Galaxy aren’t the golden goose they once were, and it’s good for the league’s development.
