Did they or did they not agree to the rules in 2009? Because if they did then what I wrote isn't wrong. You might disagree on principle, which is fine, but it isn't a discussion based in reality.

A couple of points from someone who's really of two minds on FFP.
1) There's very valid points to be made about Man City spending unwisely in many regards. However, like Chelsea and PSG the really difficult thing to analyze is their return on investment when, first and foremost, none of the three clubs would be where they are without the way buying established superstars in bulk enhanced their "brand name".
One just needs to any international forum to see that millions of followers were "bought" with those purchases. Hard to put a price on that if you're really talking sound investments.
It's also odd that Roma and Inter are clubs who would spend a bit more but don't due to FFP since they both are excellent examples of forward looking management.
I get the risk of owners pulling out but, at the same time, building their international profile is key to being able to compete with few clubs who are already "earning" the most. Would overpaying a bit to sign Ibra to go into a bit more debt but enhance CL chances and international exposure be a bad investment?
Who could really say? Chelsea wouldn't be getting as lucrative deals from Asian companies now without what happened a decade ago.
2) Roma also had a previous owner who went broke and it practically brought the club to it's knees.

They chose to agree to the rules, and thus they should live with the consequences of poor decision making, if it leads down that road. There are undoubtedly many things they could have done, but they chose a specific path. Choosing that path had certain long term implications. And that is where we stand.
You keep saying this like a broken record but you still haven't explained why i should be prevented from taking the money from my booming orange farm and putting it into improving my apple farm the way I want to, on the timeline I want to, hiring veteran apple farmers instead of younger ones if that's what I want to do.

You dumb motherfricker. Mansour has owned Man City since September of 2009. And he most definitely agreed to FFP.

In your world I can't do that because I didn't didn't earn that money via that particular crop
That's not my world. That's the world that these clubs agreed to.
And, I understand that more established teams had more leverage when establishing this world.
But, I don't think it's fair to put people who have been supporting these teams forever at the mercy of someone with the money to buy these teams. Could it have been done better? I'm sure, but I don't think that it's awful. For every City and PSG, there are clubs like Malaga and Parma who have been severely affected by owners who weren't as committed/or couldn't be as committed to their clubs as people would have imagined.

I've usually avoided the threads but if he doesn't understand that it appears Man City made all their decisions the last half decade knowing this could happen then I don't know what to tell him. Just because they have money doesn't mean they should be insulated from poor decision making.
Yeah I've retired from responding to him in these threads. Its just a waste of time.

It's actually kind of worse in a sense than someone who bought a team today because in September of 2009 FFP hadn't been finalized but it was far enough along that there really wasn't anything that he could do to stop or change it.

Because you agreed to a set of rules which explicitly forbade that very action. The principle doesn't matter. What matters is that they agreed to the rules, and chose not to follow them.

Why? What's the worst thing that could happen? The team gets relegated? Rangers still play. Portsmouth still play. Parma will still exist next season. It's not like Lehman brothers.

Step away. They most certainly did.

Mansour had been involved with Man City long before then though. The deal was agreed in principle in August 2008. He knew about FFP. He funded the purchase of Robinho. I'm amazed you didn't know this.

Okay well what if I hadn't agreed? What if I was an owner and I voted against FFP but it was passed over my no vote?

I'm not a City fan, why would I know all the various details about their ownership situation?

the negative response to poor decision making should be financial
note: i'm not arguing they're even hurt from FFP yet, because i think FFP is insanity and i'm only discussing the policy itself
and yes, city had to spend a frickload and take massive risks to get immediate street cred. nobody is denying that. they haven't been bad lately and have bought quality guys and have an elite team
kompany has a direct point: if they had been bought 4-5 years later, they would simply be unable to be an elite club
FFP serves to aid the teams with massive revenue streams at the time of implementation and eliminates any other team from the ability to compete with the elite. that's an inferior system to the system where PSG and City spend a lot
Posted on 4/11/15 at 11:32 pm to Draconian Sanctions
Because it was fairly big news. Literally the first thing he did was to buy fricking Robinho for 32 mil pounds, which was probably 32 mil pounds more than he should have.

Bingo. This is my primary problem with the idiotic "its their money they can do what they want" argument. They are custodians of an entity that transcends a simple corporation. These are ethic and cultural institutions that have existed for over a century. Not some shite NFL franchise which only exists because there's a sports market in a particular area.

Which is the real issue. I don't care too much about City. They actually just made it in and should continue to be good because they were able to build up a pretty solid asset base.
My concern is for the clubs that now have no hope of ever challenging at the top levels because the ladder to prosperity has essentially been kicked down. Even if you're able to develop a crop of world class players, you will be forbidden from paying them world class wages and they will leave.

If you hadn't agreed and then still had to follow the rules, there would be a much better argument to be had. Outside of the rules, I agree that people should do with their money what they want. But the rules set in place dictate otherwise.

Name some teams that have ceased to exist because of financial mismanagement. Rangers, Leeds, Portsmouth....they all still play.

Ok so do we have a list of what the vote to pass FFP was?
