In short, he's more worried about personnel then the formation their in. He also talks about Spain's dominance and how the players on the field just kind of did their own this with the 4-6-0

I don't know. We don't have the quality players that Spain did to allow everyone to go free roam. That Spanish team was very special and will probably be one of the better teams of all time.

I think that he was just talking about Spain out of admiration and to use them to emphasize the fluidity of the game today

I was just being hyperbolic. I found it interesting since were talking a lot about the 4-4-2 and the 4-2-3-1 when it seems like Jurgen doesn't put nearly as much thought into it as you would suspect.
He certainly spends a decent amount of time deciding on which formations work against certain opponents but he's more concerned about the XI on the field then anything else.

More rhetorical. It's silly to say he hasn't thought about formations. Jurgen's played and implemented many formations and has come to the conclusion that personnel is of greater emphasis. To say that he hasn't thought about formations is conjecture though

I said he definitely spends a lot of time deciding on formations just maybe not as much time as we think. I could be dead wrong but it's just my opinion based on what I read.
Basically what he's saying is we're not handcuffed by the diamond or whatever we roll with but i do think we look a lot better yesterday with that formation. Not whether it was because of that or because Beckerman, jones, and Beasley were out there for the first time together and played ther roles well I'm not sure.

I think the fact that the same starting line-up can do each of these formations means that we'll be seeing elements of each. I think he plainly said what he wants - how the players relate to eachother is the important part. He wants specific players to play specific roles within whatever the formation is.
I think yesterdays is not our best XI, but it may be the XI that gives us the best chance of winning against Ghana, and possibly the other two teams as well.

Yesterday was weird. It was listed as a 4-2-3-1, but Dempsey was stationed up top along with Jozy, clearly not playing outside mid. Instead, Beckerman acted as the lone anchor in front of the backline while Jones just ran around all over the field to cover any open spaces.
It worked against Nigeria, and it may work against Ghana, but I'm not sure if it will against Portugal, Germany, Belgium, etc.

I don't think the team released their starting formation. That was ESPN's best fit with the list of names they were given
In the first half, it was basically the same base formation as the past three friendlies but with different (IMO, more appropriate) personnel and with Dempsey/Altidore tracking back down the left side. I haven't watched the second half yet, so I can't comment there
In defense, it was narrow, organized, and compact. That's really your best bet to neutralize Ronaldo

I think it's as close to a best XI on the field as we can get. There really isn't anyone else I would have preferred on the field then the guys who started. Some people like Zusi more than Bedoya but I prefer Bedoya due to his work rate and speed.

Yesterday changed my mind about our teams formation and makeup because I really like both Jones and Beckerman in there. I think it ended the CDM2 debate (Jones side for me).
I have been pretty high on Zusi in the past, but I cannot remember the last time he really impressed me. However, if we bump him out, then we really have no one long set pieces or corners.

*Yes, I know that this is impossible, but he fits much better here. Plus, if Donovan cannot go the full 90, then this is ideal for Johannsson to come in as the super sub as a second striker, which is what he prefers. Plus, it seems like Jozy plays better with someone else up there.
Dempsey is so infuriating. He is lazy, makes stupid decisions, and he thinks he is playing FIFA street. He is by far our most overrated player and I would not put him in our top 5. However, he would replace Donovan in this because that is what we have.
